There are hundreds of pics of police vs protesters out there. HK police are lobbing tear gas and beating them, I'd wager the pic is certainly genuine.

Worse than that...Chinese organized crime have begun beating citizens hoping to curry favorable terms with the communist gov't

Chinese Mafia dressed in white shirts start oppressing protesters (vice)

That’s not a legit source. According to his tweets, America at this point in time is clearly the worst place to live in the entire history of mankind.

They didn't just give it away.

They had a 99 year lease. The lease ran out.

No, they had a 99 year lease on PARTS of it. Other parts of it were won after the Opium Wars and were British in perpetuity. Large portions of Hong Kong were a British Territory, like Guam or Puerto Rico is to the U.S.

The UK ceded all of Hong Kong back to China at the end of their lease of portions of it because they thought it would be highly impractical to have a divided city.

Go back and read his post.

Then look at the photo.

The photo omits the crowd of protesters in the background to give us this single girl vs crowd of heavily armoured riot police.

It’s theatrical.

What you choose not to show is just as important as what you choose to show.

Parts of Beirut were ruined during the civil war. Parts were not. And they often existed side by side. So you could take a still shot of a ruined block. But if you panned left 35 degrees, you’d see a nice hotel, a crowded cafe, and people walking up and down the street.

92% of Hong Kong where 85% of the population lived was included in the lease.

For the sake of the discussion, we really don't need to picky about this.

I'm not buying that. In short, one Chinese chic would not instigate a response. I HIGHLY doubt the photographer had any say at all in this moment.

I went there shortly after. What you say is true...kind of. The fighting there was sporadic. Basically, life went on in those moments between fighting. What is occuring in Hong Kong is different. These protests have lead to a pretty big disruption in the daily life for over a week now. The resident's there know what awaits them if they fail to realize any changes.

Just a matter of time before this same scene is played out in Taiwan... but instead of batons and fists making people bloody, it will be jets and bombs.

I hear and read about it every day. Its not a bigger story because even if the protesters somehow prevailed, it will only be for another 28 years when Beijing can legally take over HK in 2047 based on the Joint Declaration the UK and China signed when the UK gave Hong Kong back to the Chinese. The mistake was made by the West back then. Sadly, its just a matter of time now.

If the regime lasts that long. Beijing is doing this put of weakness, not strength.

You can see the shadows of the other protestors behind her. She's simply stepped into the no mans land between the crowd, and the police.

Yes, I see that.

Perhaps I misunderstand your intent. Is she theatrical in terms of circumstance (which I agree with), or are you saying is is theatrical as in staged (which is what I gathered from your post)?

Hong Kong is battling for its future right nowStability. China would fall apart without strong central rule. The protests in HK threaten that stability, and will encourage others to ignore Beijing, or act out. Repression also works.

This is so true. I'm 44 and have been brought up to fear China. "There's a billion fighting chinamen over there" etc. But truth be told China owes us just as much as Europe because they were absolutely the bitch of that little island of Japan until we stamped them out.
