Which is why the WH is begging states not to release unemployment figures for this month

My oldest son graduates college this spring. He's already had classes moved to all online, internship cancelled, and tonight is the last night the place he bartends at will be open. He's heading back home next week to shack up with us through graduation and he finds a real job (I don't think he quite understands how challenging that is going to be for a loonnnggg time).

All the best for you and your family. That's stress no one needs.

Until people start playing organized sports again, I'm just knocking things off the honey-do list.

In all seriousness though, that sucks. Sorry to hear. Best of luck to you and your family. Hopefully everything sorts itself out sooner rather than later.

There’s discussions going on about lenders and mortgage relief. If you don’t want to wait for that to possibly play out, check into a mortgage forebearance to buy some time.

The ones downplaying this and making light of it have little or nothing to lose. They also don’t have a clue what it’s like to lose everything you’ve slaved for years for. We are now having everything taken away for a second time in a dozen years. I only pray that everyone making light of this is able to avoid experiencing a similar fate.

That’s right, I’m hoping that the ones that are being inconsiderate assholes today are not forced to face the same ruin that so many of the rest of us are enduring for a second time in our professional careers. Once is bad luck. Twice is not an accident. The powers that be have brought about both of these financial armageddons. I’m too old to rebuild from the ashes again. I’m not too old, however, to take my revenge.

This. Pride can stop many from trying to obtain what is rightfully their's. If you work and pay taxes you have a rightful claim to those benefits. Use them now, if possible, this is why they are there.

I’m already in communication with my mortgage company, they seem willing to work. They say deferment plans are being worked on.

man, that's stress that i would never wish on anyone. i can't imagine the feeling.

i think alot of us are in wait and see mode, i work for a french corporation with a pretty big presence in the states, and i'm just hopeful that they don't have the need to make cuts. however, i'm not blind to see that they're gonna go for alot of absolute 'non-essential' positions first.

hoping for the best for all here.

Got sent home a week ago. Not too happy because the way it went down but the entire company I worked for will likely end up folding within a month. From the guys that are still there the oil prices + jobsite shutdowns is going to pretty much kill the company entirely

In the last 24 hours:

Wife: dental hygienist, laid off until further notice

Older son: physical therapy, hours cut in half for now.

Younger son: boilermaker, laid off until further notice

Me: teacher, still being paid, but can’t cover bills.

This is a bummer, lots of people getting sent home when their billable hours are up at my work also. I have some stuff to bill to for now but not forever if this keeps up.

I was mocking the people who justify this with the greater good in my earlier post.

The fact that the people who are unaffected or apathetic don't realize there are real consequences to these actions is the real injustice. We take risks and allow "death" every day and sooner or later someone will have to do a cost/benefit analysis of whether we move forward or stay shut down.

I guess it’s only cool to make fun of people losing jobs if it’s in the oil field

Have no income, but am debating whether acting or waiting, will cost me more. Business paid for, cash. Operating it, not yet. Stalling present owner and seller, who expects me to assimilate functioning ASAP.

Wonder where Roger is to tell the folks in this thread that they put themselves in this situation and should have planned better.

My genuine, human response is that I am heartbroken for you and your family. This is a seriously terrible situation and I hope you all pull through. And this is the side I choose to take. Seriously man, I’m sorry this pandemic has hurt your family in this way.

However, the cynical side of me wants to point out the years of posters mocking those who aren’t prepared for layoffs and denigrating government help for those who don’t have a job. I’m curious how many posters who hate government bailouts will be filing for unemployment in the coming weeks and months.

If I get laid off we are both blessed and cursed my wife is a nurse at a nursing home. At least we know her job is safe.
