I’m lucky I guess. First time I’ve had to file a hurricane damage claim.

You shouldn’t be talking about something you know nothing about.

Just changed my policy to allied in July. 1% home value. So $4500 for me. $2500 deduct for wind/hail.

But I’m interested in this UPC $1000 straight deductible.

I too have a straight $1000 deductible through UPC and the premiums are no different from State Farm

This, I just had my roof replaced last year due to a hail storm and it was a $1000 deductible.

I’m glad others have backed me up on this. I had State Farm for 10 plus years and dropped them about 8 years ago. Car insurance rates were getting outrageous. Every 6 months they call me wanting me back. I tell them you wouldn’t be able to touch what I’m paying in car and homeowners insurance premiums and they never can. If you are not shopping insurance every year to two years you are probably getting screwed. Hopefully this thread wakes some of you up. Actually I’ve been with Geico’s for 3 years and while my car insurance rates really haven’t increased at all my homeowners through UPC has increased about 25% over the last 3 years. Next year it may be time for me to at least shop around again.

Said this past year after Laura but been saying it for years:

Friends and Family, after the recent events of Laura a lot of People are realizing Two things:

A) They were unaware of who their Hoemowners insurance is with (Because they got it when they purchased their home and never spoke with an agent)

B ) They had Super High Hurricane deductibles (State Farm Customers....you can switch the life and disability policy they sold you too) at or around $10,000 of higher.

Thier are plenty of AM Beat A rated companies that will not only save you money annually but also give you a $1000 Hurricane deductible.

So please, If you have free time in the next few weeks give me a call or call an agent you may know and have them review your policy with you, not to only save but be prepared Incase we have another storm.

You do realize the CUSTOMER chooses which deductible they’d prefer? My god with the victim mentality around here

No State Farm agents try to convince customers State Farm is so much greater and use scare tactics to get them to switch, I know for sure most customers are unaware of the deductible or unaware that they have cheaper options.

Is it a policy that has been in force for a long time? That may be the case, because I'm fairly certain the state mandated min deductibles of 2% about 10 yrs ago or so

Nope-

I have National General, a subsidiary of Allstate, switched in March of this year. Named storm deductible is $1,000.

How did you negotiate??? Seriously never heard that for homeowners.

Went through a young broker who was actually willing to do his job

I would say what I wanted. He would negotiate on price. Which resulted in a back and forth email chain with the best prices he could find for me for a host of different options, like different levels of hurricane deductible, different amounts for water backup, etc. Looked at all of my options and made a call.

I'd say 15/20. 95% brick home .. our neighbor had USAA and was given the option to replace her roof which looked fine but was over a certain age OR be canceled. She had her roof replaced.

Anyone have Americas Insurance? No need to file a claim, just curious how they are to deal with.

Not true at all. Minimum deductibles are a decision made by individual carriers, not the state. Some carriers will require minimum 2% hurricane deductibles in more coastal parishes then drop to 1% or even $1000 minimum as you get farther inland. Some will even do $1000 anywhere, but I have a feeling after the last 2 storm seasons that those are probably going to go away

That's different than a named storm deductible. You should have a regular deductable and then the named storm which is usually a percentage of your insured replacement value of the home.
