Ending slavery definitely deserves a national holiday. Now stop destroying other holidays and statues becaus it offends sensibilities.
There's room for all.

False, it marks the end of slavery in one state. It is a Texas holiday, not a national holiday.
So it marked the end of slavery in both Texas and the United States.

I would be supportive of a day marking the end of slavery, as it is a huge positive event in American history. However, Juneteenth just sounds ignorant.
Why not call it “Abolition Day”?

We have MLK day. How many days do we need to celebrate civil rights, the end of slavery, etc.

I am from Texas and proud to celebrate Juneteenth, but Texas was not the last state to end/abolish slavery. West Virginia didn't free the slaves for another 8 years.

It basically marks the end of slavery. Every American was now free.
Americans are put in Angola and forced to work the fields, fix cars, and build furniture to enrich the warden. What is the difference between that and slavery?

The Emancipation Proclamation resulted in the freedom of basically no one, and the Thirteenth Amendment wasn't passed until four years after the Civil War ended.
Juneteenth marked the end of slavery in the last slave state, which is the de facto end of slavery in the United States. It's the most logical date for the holiday.
ETA: Looks like Texas wasn't the last state. I'll spend some time researching and come back.

Do you have a citation on this? Everything I'm seeing is that their plan was to cleverly maintain slavery, but the end of the Civil War basically wiped that effort.

I would honestly like to see it become a national holiday. It's a pretty substantial part of our American history and deserves to be celebrated.

That most of those in Angola deserve to be there. And yes, they deserve to be there.

I don't know how popular this opinion will be here with all of the ridiculous race stuff going on, but I really do think it is a worthwhile thing to celebrate as a nation. It's not a "Black holiday". It should be an American holiday.
Although I disagree with just about everything that is going on right now, it would be something to celebrate as a nation, but if you want to see how much black lives really matter to all these current pandering politicians (many who have been in office for MANY years), see how many times they ever mentioned Juneteenth or the possibility of it being a national holiday up before the madness that we are experiencing right now with everything.

Slavery wasn’t abolished until December 18, 1865 with the adoption of the 13th amendment.
Mississippi didn’t ratify the 13th until 1995, and Slavery was still legal in the state until then.
Tell me more about this Juneteenth bullshite.
