well it was never going to be anything big. Not enough industry down there then. Actually prolly would be pretty good not if not for the hurricanes with the new LNG plants.
But nobody is going to move there as it is an hour drive to anything. Plus its expensive to build and insure down there.
And... the locals won't allow anything in there that will compete with what is already there. Meaning stores, restaurants and so on

You mean the old ferry over the Intercoastal? My uncle's lease was near Shell's Black Bayou Oil Field. After the ferry shut down we used to have to go through Hackberry, then drive across Black Lake (near the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) on a shell road with lots of gates.

An enterprising civil engineer could write a History of Concrete, based on reviewing the exposed chunks in Cameron Parish. Starting with 1880 up to current time

Gum Cove I presume.
No rice fields down there now huh? I used to drive down, cross the pontoon bridge and watch the wildlife. Drove right up to the ranch. Nobody ever asked me to leave.

YOu are correct, it was a cable drawn ferry

The shell road with lots of gates is Shell Western Road. I've driven on it many times. You can fill a boat up with shrimp when the white shrimp are leaving the marshes to go to the sea by dropping a single butterfly net on the south side of the road as they go through a large culvert from the north side.

I think of that old boat every time I watch the ferry scene in The Outlaw Josey Wales. I have some pictures of it somewhere in my collection of photographs.

Thanks. Those gates were a PITA and the access cards were hard to come by. I never caught shrimp, but caught beaucoup fish and crabs and killed lots of ducks in Gum Cove. Good times.

Because nobody wants to live in a fricking swamp.

the locals won't allow anything in there
