70000 right out of college? What’s the ceiling in the field?
My younger brother is 33 and makes right around $400k as a Construction Manager for an Engineering/ Construction firm here in BR. I work for the same company but I’m on the Engineering side and don’t make quite as much as him as an EPM. He works way more hours than I do though but their opportunities for bonuses are so much greater.

I make $75k and only work 40 hours, 10 minutes from my home. 1 year removed from college with a civil degree.
I lucked up big time.

Get an architecture degree. It’s much more “sexy” work.

You sure did and that’s great. Stick with it and the sky’s the limit.
My brother and I actually both left college our junior years because we were in the right place at the right time with a certain company. We worked our asses off and it wasn’t easy.
My brother’s actual job title is EPM (Executive Project Manager) just like me, but on the construction side. He will be taking the position of Construction General Manager of North America for the firm we work for beginning in January.
I’m not just saying this because he’s my younger brother but I’ve never seen someone his age work as hard as he does and he just seems to know how to handle any situation.
Even though he makes a little more than me, I still prefer my job and to be based out of our office in BR 95% of the year with usually 1 site visits each week or 2 weeks. He’s based in BR too but on these huge LPG expansions and new construction he’s onsite 90% of the time.
If you don’t mind me asking, what state are you currently working in and are you a Construction Manager in the LPG sector or something else?

My best friend got this degree from Mississippi State. After a few years of putting in some grunt work in the O&G industry, he is a project manager for a pipeline company. He brings in, to my best guess, $140-180k per year, but he works a lot, and it in central/west Texas 3-4 days per week

Get a gig being a Safety or QC, then that's easy money.

I know some great QC guys and they have it made. They make decent $ but they have very little to no stress.
The ones at my office spend all day in their cubicles reviewing MTRs, COOs, etc.
We also have a couple Welding and NACE engineers in our QC and they make nice $.

I’ve worked with a bunch of Mississippi State alums in this field over the years and most have been good at what they do.
Obviously most of the folks I’ve worked with have been LSU and A&M alum, then third would probably be MissSt. I’ve also worked with a bunch of Clemson alum which it surprises me how many are actually down here. I don’t know a thing about Clemson’s Engineering or Construction Management programs but it must be pretty good.

What if you get a CM degree and then decide you hate it? What options do you have to switch into?

In my experience, equipment sales

What do you hate about it? There are so many different aspects of construction. You might just hate your particular job.
I interned as a project engineer for a commercial company for 2 years. Absolutely hated it. All I did was review plans, change proposals, and check submittals.
Graduated and immediately went into the field as a field engineer. I loved it. Being on site everyday, problem solving, seeing how things come together, etc. Was awesome.
You might not hate construction, just the part of construction you deal with.

THAT should be on some inspirational poster somewhere!
It brought a tear to my eye...

There are tons of dumbasses in this field, it’s easy to excel if you are smart and work hard. 20 years in, no degree worked my arse off. Traveled for 10 of those years. Saw cool shite. Been back in BR for 7 years. 182k a year base. Come at me.

You're right, but I was just asking the question. I loved my job at first and I loved all my internships, but my current project just really sucks and has been bringing me down. Also its scheduled to take 3 more years so theres no end in sight. I'm in industrial, and the biggest issue for me is having to live in shitty places. I'd like to live somewhere nice at some point but I just cant see myself enjoying commercial

Yea I feel for the guys that work the field and live in bfe.
I'm in commercial, building schools. Hours suck, subs suck, and deadlines really suck.
The upside is my jobs are almost always located in booming areas and it's recession proof.
I'm two years in, base pay is right under 80. Benefits are good, bonus opportunities are great
Posted on 8/16/19 at 7:12 pm to baseballmind1212
Mind if I ask what you make in total compensation in commercial? I'm also 2 years in... We probably graduated together. My base is only 70 but I'm bringing home 110. I just dont know if a move to commercial would be financially smart or all that interesting, but I would probably have a better quality of life

I graduated CM from LSU in ‘02. Worked 10 years in construction in BR and never topped $75K. Moved to Houston and transitioned into O&G sales. I have since doubled my salary and love my job within 6 years...so yes, CM has wonderful opportunities if you are willing to move to Houston and not work in construction.

No but I did leave the company I’m currently with 4 years ago and worked for Brown & Root for 10 months before I came back to my current employer.
The reason I went back to the company I’m with is because they offered me a better PM position to come back. I maybe would’ve stayed with Brown & Root if they weren’t having me travel so much. It wasn’t nearly as stressful as the job I have now but I wasn’t making as much either.
I’ve been really blessed regarding my career. My goal is to be able to retire at 50 and then just work part time if I want or keep building this side business my brothers and I have but we all know how these plans go. There’s no telling what may happen in the next 14 years that could change all that. I enjoy working. Maybe I’ll work into my 70s part time consulting.

sounds like youre well on your way to your goals. great work. I've been very fortunate as well and hope things develop as nicely as they have for you. the stress is killer but it's very rewarding and very lucrative
