Lots of places contract devs to avoid paying healthcare insurance costs. How tenured were they? If they’re young, this makes sense, but if they have 5-10 years of experience, it’s probably a bad sign that they companies they work for are trying to reduce bloat. If they’re small caps, it’s a bad sign economically

If they are trying get WFH to quit, why not make it 5 days a week back to the office ?

We're outliers, obviously. We get to work side by side on a large plot of land. It's pretty nice.
So you spend every minute of the day with your wife?
Hard pass on that.

In a year most folks will be back in the office at least 3 days a week.

Btw caring about your job, keeping steady employment, putting food on the table, that is caring about your family.

There is nothing wrong with WFH if the job can be done. I used to walk around our office and you would see people online at non work sites, and standing around talking.
How does WFH differ from in person if the job has internet access requirements?

A shite ton of people do this and more. But imagine 50 miles into a city, where it takes two hours each way. An 8 hour work day becomes 12. To add insult to injury, parking may be non-existent or cost hundreds of dollars per month, so you are stuck riding public transportation, meaning your trip could take HOURS each way.
The perception here is WFH means less hours working, but the reality is your work day starts and ends whenever you want. It's not uncommon for me to be on with someone at 8 am or 8pm.

You have to ask your employer that. I think it’s about control. That’s it.

I checked out of this thread yesterday, I'm not a huge wfh proponent, but don't have strong feelings one way or the other, when you're at the beginning of your career you have to establish yourself a bit to get a little leverage before making any demands, that's not a sign of weakness, you've just got to build a resume first

Ah yes. Working at the house in pajamas and playing vidya games while in a "meeting." The elite minds of our society.
People that are going to slack are going to do so regardless of whether they’re in office or remote; in office just gives the illusion of productivity to insecure management.
People that treat remote as a part time vacation, I have no sympathy for. The key to successful WFH is easy, get up timely, get ready and dressed appropriately and do your shite. Be proactively available and respond in a timely manner. IOW treat home like office as much as possible.

If your job can be done remotely, then it can be done remotely by someone who will do it for less salary.
India has a large educated population along with many other countries. They work for less.

Well, that just isn't true.
You can have detailed knowledge of a process or situation that only comes with experience onsite.
Could also have a distinguished place within your industry or be a SME.

This board continually vastly underestimates the amount of adults that need managed, many of which have to have shitty managers managing them because good managers don't want to work with shitty employees.
WFH is great for the minority of people that can manage themselves and their job on their own. I'd put that at maybe 25%, but I made it up.
The fact is that some sort of management of your time by a superior is needed for most people. Someone looking over your shoulder is needed for most people. Most that downvote me are probably in that group, they just can't admit it.
Finally, there are likely a lot of bad real estate contracts out there but real estate space is a pretty small portion of an employee cost for many companies. I mean how much is a cubicle cost on a monthly basis? $200 at most on average? Less than $500 for sure, that's less than a 401k, healthcare premium, etc. for most employees.
