I use to call this dude the marshmallow man. Other than Tim Couch he is probably the most popular Kentucky QB ever. It really is a sad story.

For those of us who don't follow stick and ball religiously what is the story on this guy?
A little overweight? Obese after retirement? Bad luck?

He was a household favorite around the country because he was a good quarterback but also fat.

Obese in college. Many nicknames, including the Pillsbury Throwbow. He was a fat qb, not just a gut but probably 280#s in college. He really ballooned after college. I believed he was drafted (giants maybe?), and had great talent. Weight ballooned further after college.

Great athlete, set records in Kentucky, undrafted initially but signed with the Giants and earned a super bowl ring. Tried to play indoor and was injured. After injury, his eating disorder caused him to bkow up to a massive weight. Had a show recently on which he was trying to cut weight and get healthy for his young kids. Lost 80 lbs or something last year but died today at 38 from heart related stuff. He was a fantastic guy who pretty much everyone he met really like him. Left behind two young kids. Sad.

Gif from the later arena football years, when he was well over 300#

Now he was reasonably tall (6'4" or so), but built like a guard at 285 at 19 or 20.
I think he was pushing 400 at times playing arena football and was typically in the 350 to 450 range as an adult. He was at or over 500 pounds at one point.
That can't be good for you, long-term, and obviously wasn't for him. He picked up heart and kidney problems, likely because of the weight. I didn't see where he had diabetes, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. At that weight, with the heart and kidney problems, he probably had untreated hypertension compounded by the weight.
And, the kid was a pretty good QB at 285 pounds. That's the crazy part about it.

The bam bam bigelow of college football.
Big guy. Fat guy. More athletic than he should have been.
John Madden said it best "people love to see a fat guy score"

He was overweight as a player but was a pretty incredible athlete despite his size. Played for the Giants behind Eli for 3 years. Played some semi-pro after. Really put on weight when he stopped playing.
He was working on losing the weight and had lost over 100 lbs in the last two years. Had a community programs where others could workout/walk with him at various locations.
He died of an infection that shut down his heart and kidneys. There’s some speculation it was sepsis due to sores on his thighs from working out.

Thanks guys sound like a bad deal RIP and prayers to his family.
With that said I had a friend from high school, picture of health, never smoked, low body fat and fit like a gymnast, didn't drink anymore than the rest of us and his wife found him dead on the doorstep from a massive heart attack at 34.
Tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Plan for tomorrow, but remember to live for today...

Come on, we can make fun of a man who can't stop eating all we want, but when you get to the 600 pound point, there is something medically wrong with you. That is way beyond a lazy couch potato.
I can eat all the twinkies and Mcdoubles I want and I guarantee I will never approach 600. Something was seriously wrong with this man's metabolism. Thyroid or something going on there.

He seemed like a good guy. I want to say he was interviewed last year talking about the success UK was having. Seemed like he had a great personality, down to earth.. It really is sad.

Voted for him. Didn't see his name so I wrote it in.

I remember a game about 20 years ago, he torched Arkansas but people weren't really pissed about it and just tipped their hat to him because it was such a great performance. We all respected him a lot after that.
I just got on twitter and there was a tribute to him and every highlight was from that game.

Cardiac arrest during dialysis is way more common than it ought to be, especially when sepsis is in play.
