I checked them out at a local dealer.

I didn’t test drive because the near-$40K price is ridiculous.

The new JL's are pretty damn nice. I'm trading mine in for one in a few months. Jeep finally added some new tech and creature comforts and the ride is much better.

This is true. You should look at JL. Dealers seem to have a lot in stock now with good deals. Also can join TreadLightly to get affiliate pricing and maybe better deal. Can order what you want easily. Gladiator truck coming out next year.

I considered a 4runner, but they’re too expensive on the used market.

The Rubicon will retain it's value and be easier to sell when you do get rid of it years from now. You can't really go wrong dollarwise.

My approach would be to try to find one that hasn't been offroaded / upgraded and add them yourself (but that's me, I enjoy workin on em).

My FIL buys the base model and tweaks to his needs. Says the Rubi isn't worth the cost.

I had a sport years ago. It was still quite capable off-road with the right tires.

Jeeps are up there with Tacomas for resale value. I drove one for 3 years and sold it for like 4k less than I paid for it.

It looks like getting a used one closes the gap on the cost of aftermarket lockers.

My ‘07 was all modded out (besides lockers), but had never been off road. I think it would be cool to get a base and fix it up.

I just got rid of a 2017 to get back in a truck. Knowing what I know about them now, I’d have bought a 2012 when I bought my 2017. Would have saved a ton and had the same exact jeep. Being a jeep owner for 1.5 years I learned everything to look for and how to fix everything typical that breaks. My next jeep will be a 2012-2015 2 door jk. But I’ll never not have a truck. Hard lesson learned.

Looking really hard at that gladiator. I want a truck bad but also love taking the doors/top off.

I’m with you on trucks. I currently have 2, so I’m going to sell my F150 and keep my 89 Silverado for boat pulling and mulch hauling.

I have regretted selling my Wrangler since the day I did it.

I also agree with the 2-door. The Unlimited isn’t really a Wrangler.

I've always wanted to buy a 4 door Rubicon at acution with like 200k miles. Then drive it till it breaks. Then install a crate diesel motor in it.

thats a dumb fricking statement. I’m so tired of Jeep people saying this. The TJ unlimited (LJ) is one of the most highly sought after jeeps because of the longer wheelbase. The JKU is a great platform for off-roading.

OP as mentioned, the rubicon is worth it if you plan to run tires larger than 35” because of the 44 up front and e-lockers. Add to that the 4:1 transfer case. The rubicon is Offroad ready out the box. Sway bar disconnect is useless to me because I don’t run a front sway bar.

I don't know much about jks but I put lockers and new gears in my tj for 1800 dollars.. imo if you are gonna run 35 or 37s you need to re gear. I wouldn't spend 10k more on a rubi. Actually I wouldn't buy a jk

What are your thoughts on hard vs soft tops?

I hated my hard top. It was such a pain in the arse to take off that I rarely ever did. If we buy another Jeep (wife wants one now) it will be a soft top.

Had a ‘12 JK sport. Loved it, had to sell it because needed a real backseat for new kiddo. I agree with previous posts, resale is awesome. Mine was 6spd which people tend to shy away from but not in jeeps.

I think your money would be better spent on sport/Sahara and upgrading tires/winch/suspension. Rubicon comes ready out the box and w decals everywhere but I think you can make your own specific upgrades for less money. Other base items that some sports have, crank windows and shite stereo Incase that matters to you

I sold my hard top and run a modified soft top. I’m probably not the best person to talk to about a Jeep unless it’s Offroad questions. I bought this Jeep for that sole purpose.

On my 3rd Wrangler (YJ, TJ,JK) and current one is a Rubicon.

If you want a very capable Jeep without needing to do the mods yourself, get a Rubicon. If you are handy with tools you could buy a Sport and build it up as needed.

In reality a Sport with a winch is going to get you through any issues for what you are needing. The 15 and up models came with a brake lock differential as well. So if you get stuck, it will help get you unstuck. Not as good as locked diffs, but helpful.

Rubicon will resale better though and nobody ever buys a Rubicon and wishes they got a Sport instead.

Switch disconnecting sway...
All around lockers...

No reason not to get the rubi if you're going to use it to trail ride off road...
I have had a jeep for 18 years and never needed the winch, but have used a heavy tow strap 3 or 4 times.

If you trail ride, you WILL need side rocker rails...

All other things are flavor to taste...you can go up to 35s with no real mods at all, just the lift kit and the tires.

If you plan on putting it in the MUD, just get the shittiest rig you can find, because you'll break it anyway.
