Take the battery out and get it tested. It's putting out some juice (your headlights came on you said) but maybe it's been severely weakened.
Could also be it blew a fuse - the fuse is your safety feature.
If you can get the car to somewhere like Auto Zone, they can read the codes and tell you if something is showing up in the computer.

Negative never alone.
When I was first learning about cars, dad asked "Which color is positive/negative?" As a future accountant I pondered and said "In the black means positive money, in the red, negative." He laughed and said "Forget money when dealing with cars."

You have a voltmeter but yet you still continued to keep the cables hooked up AND started your car after you saw sparks? Something tells me you don't need a voltmeter.

So I get out and check the cables and it turns out the dead battery cables had been mismatched to the terminals, which means I reversed the polarity.
Check the blinker fluid before you do anything.

Aren't there built in safety features in newer cars to prevent this kind of thing from doing real damage?
No.
Car manufactures figure the average man knows the difference between a + sign and a - sign.

A buddy had this hppen to his wife's Ford Edge. Dumbass bro in law hooked it up wrong. Blew the main fuse. It also blew almost every fuse in the car. The navigation never did come back. It will not connect to the satalites anymore.

Bring a MB to AutoZone and you get what you deserve.
No offense to your young self.

I always ground the black cable on the block of the car with the receiver battery. It's saved me from some "boo boo's" in the past.
