I was supposed to have jury duty last week but when I called the number they told me I didn't have to come in.

The weird thing is that apparently my dad got a text that Friday before meant for a reminder for me for jury duty?? We couldn't make sense of that. Bizarre.

Can anyone just do their civic duty without bitching about it?

I've never served on a jury but I've seen plenty of cases to know everyone innocent person deserves a competent one.

I spent my day yesterday at the Caddo Parish Courthouse.

About 50 people show up. Good cross section of Shreveport. Half black, half white, half old, half young, half women, and half men.

They pull random names to sit the first panel and 6th name drawn... Clyde Tipton.

So I'm up in the box and voir dire starts.

First question: "Louisiana has a mandatory life without parole for a conviction of 2nd degree murder. Does anyone have a problem with that?"

A lady on the end raises her hand and starts sobbing, "I'm a good hearted person. I couldn't send someone to prison for life even if I had no doubt he did it."

I answered the questions truthfully and remained on the panel.

About 3 pm they removed us and said they'd be right back. We wait over an hour and everyone is wondering what's going on.

They bring us back in about 4:15, thank us for our service and inform us the defendant pleaded guilty at the last possible minute.

Remember that cross section of Shreveport I described?

The jury that was nearly seated was 9 white guys, 1 white woman, a black man and a black woman.

I'm pretty sure the defense lawyer told him, "You're cooked if this goes to trial."

I was prepared to be fair, but I get it.

I googled the kid's name after we got dismissed...

The shooter was18 years old. Shot 2 brothers in the chest. 1 survived and was set to testify. Threw his life away...

I had a hard time sleeping last night thinking about it.

similar experience when I was on the jury, you’re literally holding somebody’s life in your hands, duty bound to listen up, and weigh all evidence

Curious what his defense was going to be. . . A survivor of the attack would be difficult to argue against. . .

I’ve always wondered… can you not answer questions when in jury selection?

You either hold up the paddle for the question or you don’t. Then they ask you about why you either held the panel or not.

If you don’t “answer” the question, they will ask you for a reason during individual voir dire

Self defense.

It was brought up a lot by both the prosecutor and the defense Atty. Which the prosecutor made clear, you can't start shite, decide you don't want to beef anymore, then shoot someone in self defense. And, just because someone says, "I don't like that guy, next time I see him, ect." doesn't give you the right to go to their house and kill them.

Similar to what IT described. They ask general questions and you raise your hand or not. Then they can get individual with you about why you raised your hand or not.

Funny thing the defense atty. tripped me up on...

"They're getting harder to find, but do we have any Saints fans on the panel?"

I raised my hand.

He directly ask me "Have the Saints ever won a super bowl?"

I respond, "Yes"

"Did you watch it?"

"Yes."

"Do you remember the year?"

"2009"

"Where was the game played?"

"Miami."

"What color jerseys were the saints wearing"

Without thinking too hard I answered, "Black?"

"Are you sure about that?"

"Oh wait, you're right. We were wearing white."

"So you see ladies and gentlemen of the jury. Even an eye witness can miss a detail here or there when they swore they watched the event happen."

Just saw he got sentenced to 40 years for the murder and 30 years for attempt, concurrent.

I was a juror in a week long trial in Caddo for a kid diddler. Willie Johnson. Aside from the circumstances I had a great time doing it. Got to skip work for a week and hang out, I thought it was extremely interesting. He ended up getting 80 years.

Thanks. I was wondering.

I looked up the article...

quote:

without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension.

I'm pretty sure that means you have to serve the whole sentence.

Also...

kid diddler. Willie Johnson

Name checks out.

don't know why everyone feels that way, I enjoyed my time on the jury(foreman ) it was interesting, no big imposition, and it is, after all, your civic duty

If one gets paid it's no big deal. We do at work. I would expect bordom since having a phone is probably not allowed.

Almost. They asked me how I knew I was too drunk to drive while I was driving before.

Told them when I had to shut one eye in order to see straight….pretty sure that got me dismissed by one side or another
