Sleep with a pillow between your knees and never ever sleep on your belly. Has helped my husband tremendously.

Best thing you can do as you get older is stretch in the morning and night. I mean deliberately stretching like you’re about to run a race.

That and lifting will keep you going well.

I say this a lot and truly mean it, but seated goodmornings changed my life. If you have back pain, I cant recommend them enough.

This. We used to jump off the roof of the shop about 6 times a day when we were young. Now ankles, knees, and hips are shot.

Sounds like you need to start exercising.

Lifting, cardio and stretching.

This is not true at all if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, weight routine, stretch and cardio. I’ve never felt better.

I'm turning 62 this month, and I feel fantastic. I have some arthritis here and there, but nothing debilitating. I exercise a ton, and I'm ramping that up now. The last three days I've done cardio in the mornings and weights in the afternoon. It helps that I'm semi-retired. I'm 6'-1" and 175 pounds. I have to add stretching to my routine, and I'm going to start that soon... probably yoga.

To avoid this at 62 (and being tall), I stretch nearly every day. It only takes me about 10 minutes, but makes a world of difference for me.

I'd rather deal with a some lower back pain than do gay shite like that. christ man have some respect.

You think your great great grandfather was getting up and stretching before heading out to work his 13hr day on a farm? gtfo

The surgeon that did my back told me about a patient of his.
He was a competitive cyclist in his late 20s. He dropped his razor while shaving and tried to catch it before it hit the floor. Went down and couldn’t move.

He basically exploded 2 discs and had to have a 2 level fusion.

Yeah, regrettably, biking does carry some risk of back issues if the bike is not the right size / not set up to optimally support the body. And OP said he does Peloton. It is something he should look at if he hasn't already.

My two denarii.

You would need an MRI to definitively show what you've done. Not all backs are the same, i.e., the spacing between discs and nerves varies. A good chiropractor or therapist (I've used Airrosti) could likely diagnose what you've done.

If you want to DIY, then you may want to start with Aleve - will help with the inflammation. Then you can slowly begin to add some movement.

As others have noted, there are several great stretches that you can do: seated goodmornings (you can do these by crossing your arms on your chest as opposed to a bar across your shoulders), McKenzies, side-McKenzies, supermans, etc.

Finally, in the long-term:
- Get some flexibility in your hips, hamstrings and buttocks (again, more stretches, imagine that). This will take some of the 'load' off your back.
- Strengthen your core.
- Maintain your back in a neutral position during activities.

Hope this helps. God bless and best wishes. Things will get better.

Alternate ice and heat.

Every time my back flares up I do a course of PT. They do heat, stretching, deep tissue and dry needling. Dry needling is the best.
