Volunteered for LADB hearing committee. Free and easy CLE for the year plus public service. Workload isn’t crazy, the staff is great to work with, and I’m learning a whole new area of law.

Does it require travel to BR? If so how often?

No, committee members serve in their own region generally, and in-person hearings are held usually at local courthouses. I was once on a matter in an adjacent region, but that’s rare.

If interested, call LADB and ask for application info. There is a vetting process, but it’s routine as long as you have no disciplinary record.

Anybody else find it funny that no one has to explain what CLEs are? This whole damn board is nothing but lawyers

That didn’t work out real well for the EY accountants.
Luckily I don't work for them, but I can say with the Governmental Accounting continual gymnastics the CPA/Auditors in our state have to play, they deserve any windfall they can get. The LLA's office is becoming quite burdensome with wanting CPA's to parlay as Attorneys

Eh, the CPE is to refresh our memory over time. I took the end of content exams and passed them, therefore, I know the content. Is the goal for me to know and understand the content or waste my valuable time?

Alabama requires six CLE hours to be live, but they can be in person or live online webinar. The Alabama State Bar offers free live webinar CLE’s via Zoom throughout the year. You literally just watch them. No buttons to click or quizzes to take. I just do those throughout the year and then I never have to attend any in person nor do I have to rush to meet my requirements at the end of the of year. I actually have one or two excess hours this year that will roll over to 2026.

I have to get 15 hours for my area of specialization. It is hard to do in Louisiana and I can't wait until the end of the year to look for credits. I may present in 2026 to get my hours. If I recall correctly, you can get six hours of credit for a one-hour CLE that is presented solo and with written materials.

Correct. Three hours per hour taught, plus three hours for materials.

Correct. It's the way to go, typically, if you can.

I used to teach regularly until a friend conned me into teaching a “nuts and bolts cle for new lawyers” and walked into a room with like three new lawyers and dozens of experienced ones. I got about sixty seconds into my prepared basic materials before just throwing it out and doing it off the cuff. I’ve refused every request since

I had to pay a fine a few years ago because the program sponsor didn’t submit the information in time.

Seems like fine should have been waived once you showed that you actually attended the online course in a timely matter and reporting was due to sponsor's delay.

They must have been late as shite, being they have until January 31st to report.

Speaking of, just got the email that my last four hours just posted

It gets better. You self-report by completing and signing a form and giving it to the sponsor. The form explicitly states it has to be turned in by the sponsor; the MCLE folks won’t accept it from individual attorneys.

However, the responsibility to make sure it’s posted timely is mine alone.

I just paid the hundred bucks and chalked it up to getting fricked by a Byzantine bureaucracy.

I've got online courses playing in the background while I work. Just listening for them to stop and give out the attendance codes

The courses I took on the MCLE website don’t have codes. Just hit play and come back an hour later to get your certificate.

Just finished my last online hour
