here are huge taxes and penalties for early withdrawal.
10% of the withdrawal. It's not that big a penalty. Also, there's an exception if she is let go from the system and withdraws the money in the year she turns 55 or older.

Leave the poor lady alone, she tried her best. She is a shining light for her community.

Can your convert that figure from dollars to margaritas?
I can't make that conversion, but it comes out to about 8,625 spare keys to the Cabildo apartment she was locked out of.

Does she still owe federal taxes?

Can someone tell me this. According to her wiki page, Ray Nagin planned on turning Cantrell's neighborhood and 5 other neighborhoods into green space (I assume another name for grass lots?), but Cantrell was head of some association and went against Nagin's plans and eventually won saving those neighborhoods from being destroyed.
Her neighborhood was Broadmoor.. What would have been the better outcome? Turn those areas into green space or save the neighborhoods?
No matter what people think of Nagin, I still think he wasn't a horrible mayor in comparison. His first term he had most of the white vote so after Katrina, when most of the voters in the city were black, he made that "chocolate city" comment to appeal to his voting base. He wasn't just up there ranting saying shite just to say it. He knew what he was doing.
And what I don't get is.. He was convicted on wire fraud and money laundering, but that seems more like a requirement to be NO mayor. And for some reason people blame him for deaths after Katrina and his decision to put people in the Super Dome, but it wasn't like he had a bunch of time to prepare. I remember that morning.. I think it was Sunday morning he was on TV warning to get out if at all possible. I know the traffic was horrible getting out, but he could have only done so much with the time he had..
Luckily a storm like Katrina didn't hit during Cantrell's time in office.

The article says she’s cashing it out. I’m wondering if she’s doing a rollover which wouldn’t be subject to tax or penalty. I believe you can even roll over a government plan into IRA.
Even if she takes it out, she can still roll it over within a certain period of time (I believe 60 days). It sounds like she’s just cashing it out (whether in cash or as a rollover) strictly so she doesn’t lose it in the case she is convicted.
