re: Moving to suburb of New Haven, CT

I live there.
Tips:
All wheel drive vehicle helps a lot.
If you're renting, look for a place with off street parking. There are typically street parking bans during snow storms.
Make sure you have a warm coat (a pea coat looks nice and keeps you warm).
Other than that, it's not so bad. It gets a little tiring come late February/March when it's still cold.
New Haven is a fun city. Make sure you hit all the pizza spots (some of the best in the country IMO). Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern are the big three but BAR New Haven is also fantastic. Barcade is a fun spot that's an arcade/bar if you're into classic arcade games.
Check out the Yale Art Museum. It's free and really nice. There's a lot of great hiking. Sleeping Giant State Park is nearby but it's currently getting cleaned up from an almost tornado that hit not too long ago.
If you're into seafood, try out Stowe's in West Haven. It's right on the sound (which isn't the prettiest beach but whatever). Fantastic lobster rolls.

You need to apologize.

Guess who hasn't traveled very widely in CT.

Fwiw, there is no place in USA like Connecticut for giving speeding tickets for 1 mph over 50 on highway. Just don't.
Its the biggest difference with south. You can go 68 all day in 65 zone in south. In ct that's a ticket.
This is very true. Also the left lane passing only is enforced pretty heavily.
They also have a ton of commies in CT, so enjoy high taxes and a bifurcated society. CT is a true tale of very rich and very poor.
They also are losing population so your real estate may not hold up like a state that gains population yearly.

Look at my user name? I work in the field of biology and am generally associated with the oilfield or oilfield related products. Of course I’ve never been to new haven.
But i actually have heard of the rough patches around Yale before. I think it was in an article written by Dominque Foxworth on the undefeated about the lengths parents go to get their children athletic scholarships.
I was shocked at the crime rates, especially so close to Yale’s campus.

What an odd statement.

Connecticut is the wealthiest state in the union lol.
Just knowing the general differences between the south and northeast, you will be shocked by the taxes and busy body civil servants, and by how good the public schools are (if you have kids).

Which suburb? It’s been ten years but I used to go up there frequently. Hamden is nice. You’re close enough to Boston/NYC for any big city needs. I actually like the area around Yale, but as others mentioned, it changes quickly once you step outside of campus.

Are you getting paid more
I was counting the days to graduate HS to bail that state. Never returned

Yes, a huge bump even after taking cost of living and taxes into account. But equally as important as the pay is the title and position move that will help set up the rest of my career. Hardest part will be moving family and adjusting to leftist wackos.

Yeah Coons and Murphy are the worst. My dad is trying to bail bigly
But the public schools are great and u are only like a 45min train ride to NY so make sure you take them for Thanksgiving and Rockefeller for the Tree lighting
Plus you have the the Cape, Newport, Martha's, or Naraganest in the summer that are only 1hr or 2hr away

I spent a couple of years in the New Haven area while I was getting my PHD from Yale. It’s a pretty nice area.

Years ago I asked someone about the nearest movie theatre in New Haven. His response was “Do you want to go somewhere safe like a mall?”

It's fine, totally different from the south. There are a ton of great day trips from New Haven. NYC and Boston are easy, but I prefer the smaller coastal towns like Mystic, CT. As previously mentioned, March is frustrating when it is getting warmer elsewhere.

Living so close to Yale, I'm sure you won't have to deal with many douchebags.
