Don't buy GE. I bought a set in 2010. Washer started making loud squeaking noises after 1-2 years. Dryer has been on the fritz the past year. It has some auto-shutoff if there is too much weight detected, but now it's become very sensitive and will shut off if there is a normal load in there.

I bought a GE set .. was super skeptical after reading reviews BUT it was pretty much the only thing that met everything that I wanted.

No trouble yet .. owned since last August. Bought at Lowe's for about $900 total.

Go in store and see what floor models are marked down. Did that at Home Depot and got a front loading Samsung for $550, normally $900 but reduced due to a scratch, and got a Samsung Dryer for $600. Had both for a year and a half with absolutely no complaints.

I did the same when i got my Samsung front loaders a few years back. Saved 600 bucks on the set that way.

For a good, basic washer and dryer check out Estate Brand by Whirlpool. They are basically a "no-frills" reliable units.

I had an Estate brand washer and dryer before I got married and didn't have a single issue. When I got married and moved into a new house we got some fancy arse HE Whirlpool washer and dryer and every year we have some kind of electric control bullshite go out on it. I would much rather have my old Estate units back

What about kitchen appliances? Any brands to stay away from or ones you recommend?

It takes on average about 3-4 hours to dry anything.

isnt everything mildewed after being in a damp dryer for 4 hours?? W.T.F.

i love my 80s maytag set. a full wash in less than 20 minutes and the agitator actually AGITATES and cleans shite.

You can't beat the old washers and dryers with a non-electronic timer. You could clean the contacts and probably be up and running. Or change the element and be back in business in 20 minutes.

Sometimes just frick technology.

If you just want a basic washer and dryer that will work day in and day out, get the CHEAPEST washer you can find and it's matching dryer (all dryers are basically the same, differences are more in washers)

That's what I did.

Also, check for a Sears outlet. I got a stove and fridge from the one in Bham and there are practically no signs of damage on either (the fridge has a slight wave on one side and the stove has a tiny dent in the back of the top, which cant be seen). Saved several hundred between the two.

Less bells and whistles the better. Older Kenmore or Whirlpool won't break and are available used all over the internet.

The ones with computers and shite all break and are expensive to fix.

this.... our first w/d was the Whirlpool Cabrio line... they were highly rated, expensive, etc.... the dryer lasted about 4 years, the washer about 5...

now we have the kind like we grew up with, with the agitator inside and shite, and i don't even know the brand..... but they haven't given me one problem yet, 3 years later...

Go with a brand name simple unit without all the electronics, bells and whistles. I bought an LG with all kind of electronics and regret it. Should have just gotten a 1970's Maytag like my mom had.

I am at Home Depot right now.

I see this Samsung set for $1k

Question: These newer top load washers dont have an agitator in the middle like the older models. Is the agitator not necessary?

We've been happy with our Maytag Bravos XL. Top load washer.

I hate our new Maytag Bravos. Our house came with a 20 year old Maytag that worked great. Washed light loads in 20 minutes. These new washers almost all have the wash bucket design, while older washers had agitators. Main reasons I hate it are the much longer wash times for light loads and low levels of water, to the point where some laundry still has dry spots after the cycle is done. Now it takes at least an hour just to wash my work clothes.

dude..they clean like shite. dont fall for that.

its all about the water conservation..that 'top loader' without an agitator you're looking at is as useless as the front loaders.

They have a GE set on sale for $399/each until 7/15

7c dryer - GTDP220EFWW (regular $549)

3.8c washer with agitator and stainless basket - GTWN2800DWW (regular $599)
