Pros: Money
Cons: 1.Wife becoming lonely and starts shopping for more things than groceries. 2.Missing out on valuable time with his child/children that he'll never get back. 3. Living in a man camp with a bunch of oil field hands or even worse, living among civilians in SA. 4.Traveling across the world every month. 5. Anything and everything besides money.
Working on international rotation sucks. It would be absolutely idiotic and selfish to try it with a family.

Depends on the living situation. Closed compounds like Aramco will be fine as you’ll spend most of your time away from Saudi society. Open compounds, you’ll live next to an Arab and will have to get used to their rules.
Lived there when I was 10-11. Europe is extremely close and cheap flights. We went on multiple vacations every year and it opened my eyes to different cultures around the world.
shite is getting real with Iran, though. Have a plan to get out of the country.

Meh, If the money is right, I can tolerate the 18hr travel time between Saudi and MSY for a year. I've done that flight before and it wasn't too bad. Get yourself on a CC with a travel rewards system and the points will be great.

It is hot as frick in the summer... like stupid hot. Why would you put up with that as well as the threat of being beheaded or blown up?

Pros: Cash.
Cons: Muslims and war.

You're asking for your son?
That seems rather pathetic to me, but good luck.
Do you have a son?
If my son was looking at a major life change, I'd do anything I could to get as much data as possible to make the decision. This being a Louisiana board, there is most likely someone on here with first hand experience in the oil field in SA. Seems like a great way to tap into some knowledge.
Keep being a dick though, really brings a lot to this thread and the board as a whole.

I lived in Thailand as a kid for 3 years, dad was in oil and gas. Spent about a month each year in US, not a big deal.
Now Thailand was the shite, loved it. Saudi Arabia, I'd have to think long and hard about. Dont think I'd bring kids there. If it was just me and wife though, I'd go in a heartbeat.

It's not your decision!

If you thought that me telling the truth was "being a dick," then I'm not really sure what to say to you.
Some might apologize just in case they may have offended your delicate sensibilities.
I don't feel any sort of an apology whatsoever to be necessary.
Have a great day!

Saudi Arabia is arguably the most severe and uncompromising Middle Eastern country. If you frick up there, you're likely going to pay the ultimate price for it.
Also, should he go and everything turns out all right, would Uncle Sam still tax him?

It worth it. I’m sure he could find a good job here instead

Our son was in Doha, Qatar for two years, family was Stateside. Money was good, vacationed in Europe, 10-12 days Stateside, inexpensive healthcare.
Opportunities to be in Saudi Arabia arose, he said 'no thank you' and was in a role much more insulated than in O/G

No.
That was rhetorical, the answer was obvious.

What does that have to do with anything? OP merely said that he was looking for pros and cons of taking this job. Information I would certainly be looking for if one of my kids was in his kid's situation.

There wasn't an element of "truth" to what you posted, it was just your shitty, useless opinion.

Absolutely he should go. If he is making serious money there is no reason not too.

Son with young family has an opportunity to go work there for serious, tax free income in the oil field
As said only the first $85k is tax free and that's only if you spend less than 30 days in the United States.
If he has a young family, where will they be? I don't think I'd move my young family to Saudi unless you are talking him making like 4-5X what he would anywhere else.
Something to certainly consider is the career moves. You do it for a year or 2 to move up bigly then its certainly worth it.
But your kids are only young once and not for long.

The first 104K is tax free. After that he will have to pay federal income taxes although probably not state taxes (unless he maintains a domicile for voting in elections, keeping a drivers license, etc).
As for the severity of the laws, he will likely be living in a bubble in an a American compound or in an apartment building with many expats. If he doesn’t get blackout drunk or do anything really reckless, he will be fine. However it’s absolutely true that he may be in prison for several years for something that would be nothing more than a night in a drunk tank here.
My gf’s brother in law is a retired lieutenant colonel who worked on a base and then also in security after retirement. He is basically a MAGA Republican who likes to fix things, watch Fox News, and play with his dog. Doesn’t drink much. He loved his first stay and liked his second stay but chose to end it after three years.
