You are such a vagina in these threads

Abu Dhabi
An entirely different world than Saudi Arabia. They actually celebrate Christmas in Abu Dhabi (as long as you don't display a cross, secular symbols only). You can buy pork, but it is behind a curtain like porn videos were in the US during video rental days. You can buy alcohol with a US passport or equivalent. Has to be brown-bagged. Bars are in every hotel, and with your credentials, they let you in, to keep their native sons from sneaking in. You still can't hold hands or hug in public, even if you are married. You still can't be alone with a random woman, not even in elevator etc. Beaches are still separate, the "Family" beach is women and children only, surrounded by gigantic privacy fence, and women can wear bikinis there. Only Muslim women must wear hijabs. There are fashion police that will enforce laws if bawette gets too trashy on the street.
They have a very interesting history. They love white people. Prior to the 1960's, Abu Dhabi was just a village of pearl divers. The men went out in boats every day and held their breath to swim down 60 feet and pry clams open looking for pearls. That was their only commerce. When the British found oil there, the British tried a different strategy. Instead of killing them all and taking their land, the British simply offered them royalties on the oil. It ended up being billions and billions of dollars and the money, to this day, still gets distributed equally among all native citizens. The surrounding deserts are littered with antique sports cars that locals bought, drove, got stuck, and abandoned, rode a camel back to town, and bought another car, when all that money started flowing in the 60's. They love white people, especially the British.
They are very liberal, probably the most liberal society in the Muslim world.
Absolutely nothing like Saudi Arabia. my inlaws lived in Abu Dhabi for two years, I got to visit them. I would consider Abu Dhabi.
You couldn't pay me enough money to live in SA. I'd rather be middle class in USA. By a mile.

What, for being against enslaving women, banning alcohol and fun in general, partaking in slavery, and calling out the worst regime outside of North Korea? No. That does not make me a vagina, it makes me principled. Save for North Korea, no country violates my moral code more than the Saudis.

You also forgot about the slaves. Great country!

I’d say a pretty disgusting one built on the backs of slaves.

Dude, they are slavers. I can’t think of a less liberal policy than slavery. They’re pieces of shite and shame on people who go visit there willingly.

It is Saudi Arabia, except they allow foreigners with money to live like a Saudi Prince. Under that pleasant mask of big buildings, beautiful beaches, and an indoor ski resort is a face of an absolute monster. You partying there is on tops mountains of skulls that it took to build that place. It’s all an act, and people fall for it. Dubai is one of the most disgusting cities in the world. I will never go there unless I have no other choice (ie work) and spend a bare minimum if I go there.

The slaves you talk about, are you talking about the Indians (dot not feather) they import to build all their shite?

His kids will be exposed to boredom and a different culture. That's about it. And in 5 years, they could move back to the US and live a prosperous life. The world isn't as bad you want to believe. There is filth here that kids could be exposed to, and yet many aren't. There are at least 9 million foreigners working there. That's not counting tourists. You worry too much.
Living in a place where women are seen as lower than dogs, and it’s encouraged to behead adulterers, rape victims, gays, and apostates? frick that. There are a lot of downsides exposing your kids to that mentality

Nothing happening on the hiring front right now. Rig count is dropping with the price of oil. We haven't let go any field staff yet but I had to let go some support and sales staff two weeks ago.
We're all just in a wait and see mode right now. I heard today from one of our competitors their activity is down 24% for the year.

Yeah Abu Dhabi isn’t bad at all. I could definitely work there if I had to. No way I’d do Saudi though

Yea I figured that would be the case but figured just in case. Thanks for responding.

I agree with your assessment, especially based on the experience of the one guy I know who lived there and would very much fit in with the posters on the Political Talk board.
If his wife is stay at home, it’s even more manageable. The kids will go to Gulf International School or something very similar with mostly Brits, Indians, Americans, etc.
This is all hypothetical as he would be living in Bahrain rather than Saudi Arabia anyways.

Where were your international assignments besides Luanda?

Well as long as he doesn't see any of it, I guess all is good then.

I thought the foreigners lived in their own gated enclaves with most of the western comforts, including alcohol and modern dress for women.

For the former certainly. But I don’t want the idea to get in my kids heads that women are lesser people.

Yeah, because they can walk right out if they wanted to.
quote:

A vastly inferior and evil culture.

The world isn't as bad you want to believe.
Tell that to a gay person or atheist living in Saudi Arabia.

The filth here partaking in that bullshite are thrown in prison. Big fricking difference.

9 million? There are only 32 million people living in Saudi Arabia. Over 1/4 of them are immigrants? The United States doesn’t even have close to that percentage. They accepted literally 0 refugees from Syria. So where are those 9 million coming from? I’ve never known an American who has lived in Saudi Arabia, but known plenty that have lived in Europe and East Asia. If there are literally 9 million immigrants living in Saudi Arabia, then the answer is disturbing: they’re slaves. No American, European, or Asian goes and lives in Saudi Arabia willingly. It takes an assload of cash for someone to move there, and I don’t think it’s enough for immigrants to be over 1 in 4 of the population.

I don't know about the 1 in 4 number, but there are a lot of Africans and Asians doing construction and the like. Saudis think manual labor is beneath them.

All West Africa. Port Harcourt (worst place on earth) on a rotation. Luanda as live in. Douala on rotation then later Douala as live in. I didn't mind Angola and Cameroon so much because it was safe enough to be able to drive yourself and explore both countries. Nigeria you need armed guards to go to the grocery store.
I was offered the Bahrain/KSA live in job while in Luanda but chose a lower paying job in Houston instead after talking with the person I would have been replacing.
I wanted to take another ex-pat job in Ploiesti, Romania when I left Cameroon but decided on an offer in Houston instead. Mostly because of my family. After losing our son this past March I'd happily go back overseas again.

I had no idea that there were so many openings in West Africa. I figured the vast majority of you guys would be in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in the Gulf.
A friend of mine in elementary school moved with his family to Singapore when Exxon transferred his dad there and that confused me as I got older and realized that it wasn’t exactly a hotbed of oil wells.

Tell him to ask about his life insurance policy through his company or any other policies he might have. I was offered an oil field job in Kuwait and if I was to take it, my life insurance was voided the time I was out there because it was so dangerous.
Kuwait is about the safest place in the world. I spent over a year there and chances of getting killed in Jackson, BR or NOLA are much greater than getting killed in Kuwait. Kuwait City is very modern and western women don't have to be covered, I've seen plenty of ME women there uncovered too.

This is a great opportunity for him and his family. They will get to experience living in a foreign place and make a great living. There are no cons if you ask me.
If he was going alone, then fine. But there is no way in fricking hell I would put my wife through that. Women are 2nd class citizens there.

You don't know a GD thing about KSA except what you read on some political blotter.
The beheadings/hand-offing etc is done on the 3rd Wed of every month in the local (city/district) town square
Mostly 3rd world expats from Philippines/Africa that were caught for the umpteenth time for stealing, importing drugs or some other major crime. You don't HAVE to go if you don't wish. If you do, it's your choice. Only a true DA would allow his family to witness something like that. So nice try..
The Matawa (religous police) don't mess with anyone, unless you REALLY step out of bounds. And then usually it's only if you are working near Riyadh, the capital. I worked in Jeddah for almost two years and we NEVER saw or heard of any ex-pats or their families have a run in with them. EVER Strike two....
It's their country DA. They don't have to run it the way you want your liberal world run. Don't want to deal with it...don't go over there...simple as that.
The reason they have so many immigrants is because they don't do any jobs involving labor over there. Anything that is basically not a shop, is done by hired help, not slaves Mr. "Oh-so-knowledgable".
Pakistani's, Koreans, Philipino's and some Africans provide most of their labor work force. And while they are not payed a kings ransom, it's 3-5 times what they would make in their home countries, therefor they choose to move there and work. Listening to your rant one would think they are brought in on slave ships
Technical jobs are usually held by European, American and Australian ex-pats, such as myself , during my time there. You usually live in a compound with other westerners, work together, play together and party together on the weekends. Someone , somewhere, is ALWAYS having a western style get-together in town. If anything holds true, if you put an American, a Brit and an Aussie in the same place for more than five minutes they will discover a way to make booze, grill out and conjure up some type of social event. Thats what makes us great.
Yes, there are inherent dangers, more so these days than the old days, but something can happen just as easily here as there. The Saudi gov't knows that their society can not function in the modern world without western technical help/experience and allowing ex-pats to be murdered doesn't bode well for future employment vacancies being filled. Your WAY more apt to have something bad happen to you in Mexico then you are over there.
So please, take a deep breathe, put you a new maxi-pad back in and cease with the ridiculousness your spewing from your computer chair in "I never left bum-frick county, Mississippi". It's a big world out there chief...you should give it a try
