I just found out that my company lost several employees in the crash. This is awful :(. I don't even know if any of them were my direct / indirect colleagues because they aren't releasing names.

The names have been released.

If I was a frequent traveler I'd prefer terrorism over a plane malfunction.

Planes are safe. I trust the ability for airlines to fix whatever may be wrong. My worry is what hi-jinx the TSA will throw at me.

Im saying terrorism but don't think they gained access to cockpit. Thinking bomb. The cockpit these days are locked before the planes taxi these days. No way they gained access in there, unless the flight attendants/ pilots didn't lock the cockpit door.

Well ya.

But you're more likely to die due to a plane malfunction versus terrorism. Therefore, any incident of plane malfunction that raises the probability of plane malfunctions happening to you is the result you would not like to see.

Terrorists taking down a plane is so remote, that I'd prefer the next time a plane go down, it be terrorism, and probably 5 times after that as well. The inverse of that reality would be that the plane itself as a mode of transportation is so safe, its basically negligible if it isn't already.

The last time I'm aware of a plane being brought down by terrorism was on 9/11. I can probably name you 30 accidents. Hence, my comment. Plane are very safe, and I'd rather add to the "tally" of terror accidents than merely mechanical failure accidents, if I had to make such a morbid decision.

Poor wording. They were Chinese and Malaysian nationals, not less tragic but don't make it seem like 20 Americans from Austin died in the crash.

Aren't you also in the semiconductor industry, unless I am mistaking you for someone else? Anybody from your company on that flight? Isn't most of the semiconductor manufacturing done in Asia?

Poor comprehension. I didn't say they were Americans and nor did I insinuate it. They are linked to America because they work for an American company.

No, I'm not in semicon. I do have contacts in that industry via old customers. Freescale is pretty well known in those circles and most manufacturing does happen in Asia now via subcontractor firms.

I never inferred they were American, I did the opposite in pointing out that they weren't from Austin in case someone on here sees that and shits their pants bc their friend works at Freescale.

No. Freescale has manufacturing sites in Malaysia and China. These were employees that worked at those sites.

Freescale Semiconductor FSL -0.09% has confirmed that 20 of its employees were confirmed passengers on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Twelve are from Malaysia and eight are from China. The entire Freescale Semiconductor community is deeply saddened by this news. The company is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide more information as it becomes available. “At present, we are solely focused on our employees and their families,” said Gregg Lowe, president and CEO, Freescale. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic event.” The company has assembled counselors and other professionals through Freescale’s Employee Assistance Program, with around-the-clock support for those impacted by this tragedy.

Doesn't say where they lived. They were Malaysian and Chinese citizens and I assume they lived there. Not that it matters. A human life is a human life, regardless of nationality.

There have been others since. Two Russian airliners were brought down by bombs.

When the KAL shoot down and the Air India bombing occurred, a debris field was found.
