I don't remember anyone in my family preferring McKenzie's to Randazzo's, except my grandmother. Now this was back in either the late 70's or early 80's, but she used to have to put a little pat of butter on that dry arse King Cake, like it was a dinner roll, just to get it down.

Exactly! Randazzo was the only cake in town in the 70's and you would get somebody who lived in Chalmette but worked in NO to bring them to work, When faced with a McKenzie a pat of butter was the only way to eat it. The only thing McKenzie bakeries had going for it was that their stuff was cheap and the turtles.

Nonsense nostalgia memory. McKenzies was very good, if you’re talking about the perfectly round one with icing that was about $5. The big ones without icing were unremarkable.

But Haydels and Randazzo and likely some others were and are just as good or better but expensive. But for the price, McKenzies was the best.

Where do y'all rank a Gambino's? That's the first and only one I've had. That taste of the sugar and such made me crave them. I get the Community King Cake coffee whenever I can because it has that taste to it.

You are correct, but the carpetbaggers who never had one will disagree.

Oof. That's a large swing and miss. Don't hurt yourself out there.

I stopped at Tastee Donuts on Thursday evening specifically to get an old school Mckenzie's King Cake to bring to my law school class. They didn't have the large size but wanted $27 for a small king cake. I said no thanks and went down the road and picked up a Haydel's traditional.

I am 75 y/o, I am a traditionalist, I can safely say that the King cakes of today are 100x better than the ones I grew up with.

And that's all I have to say about that.

We had a Joe Gambinos last week and didn’t even finish it. Very dry and blah. I think we’re pretty low maintenance too.

McKenzies is terrible. I can throw sugar on top of a french bread at home.

Never had DP, so definitely not a fan boy there either. I don’t have a go to King Cake, but I know McKenzie’s ain’t it.

It’s been probably 15 years since I had a Gambinos. I recall that they’re fine but have never been as highly regarded as some others. I want to say Gambinos king cakes are sweeter than others, if you can believe.

not sure on the recipe but i think tastee donuts will ship them to you.

I got one from Tastees when they Tastees first started selling McKenzie king cakes, circa 2006, and it was a big Tastee donut with sprinkles. It was NOT a mckenzies. Hopefully Tastee isn’t still trying to frick with people who don’t know any better.
