but this is still my favorite, the original, no cinnamon, no white icing.
Sounds terrible
No cinnamon? WTF
So it's just dough with sugar on top?

Mckenzies use to have a king cake back in the day where a couple of the pieces had a cherry and sprinkles and i believe icing, the rest of the pieces were traditional no icing and granulated sugar

It’s a cinnamon roll. The filling, icing, and colors were just added on to make it look fancy.
Don’t turn this into something it’s not
Isn't a cinnamon roll just a roll they added cinnamon to? Don't turn it into something it's not.
But king cake is not just a roll, the dough contains egg and sugar, making it a "brioche". It comes from the gateau des rois of southern France.
When Marie Antoinette was reported to have said: "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" when the peasants had no bread, what she meant was to open up the patisseries (as opposed to the empty bakeries or boulangeries) and give them the brioche therefrom.
Some French brioche king cakes from Provence:
...and as a reminder, any baked good that is old and stale will taste old and stale as most store bought king cakes do.

I worked at the one in Lakeview on Harrison Avenue when I was in high school. There was one small slice on each end that had a cherry and sprinkles.

boudin is also not a king cake,
this!
There is a place in Houma that has a boudin stuffed king cake.
Think of boudin material rolled in dough in the shape of a king cake and a queso topping. Might not be an official king cake, but…

I know I’m supposed to say I love King Cake as a native New Orleanian… and I don’t hate it. But it’s such a bland dessert. It’s like a dry cinnamon roll, but way worse.
King Cakes needed some new life, in my opinion.

Today I had one from Gautreaux's in Rayne. While it was more of a donut type consistency, it was one of the best I've ever eaten...
