Our CIO sent out an email yesterday to everyone at corporate (A little over 1,200 of us) saying that if things continue to trend in a negative direction that we will be asked to work from home until things settle down. They're upgrading those with a desktop to a laptop so they've got the flexibility to work remotely.

Exactly. Any legitimate company is minimizing risk/exposure right now. Any legitimate company also knows the hit they could possibly take from infection far outweighs any minuscule “productivity” they’d get from demanding people be physically present at an office (archaic as hell as someone else pointed out).

OP’s work situation sounds super legit.

I love when people want employees to have an undying allegiance, even willing to risk getting a novel virus/die, to a company that would fire them if it made financial sense even if said employees were doing a good job.

This has always made me laugh too. I’ve always found it to be a generational thing.

You hired people you can’t trust? Paranoia and control never make a good work environment. Show that you trust them and care, maybe they will prove you wrong.

Also with tools such as Teams, Presence Notifications, Call Clients with metics, CRM’s, Salesforce, Outreach, and Gong, why do you even need employees at an office?

OP must have shite employees if he can’t trust them working from home.

At my company we had to do that for a month after Harvey. And people work from home all the time now. As long as you get your shite done and in an acceptable manner who cares if you did it sitting a crappy cube or on your couch at home

I actually tend to be more efficient at home because I can start work earlier since I don’t have to commute, have less distractions (ie coworkers), and don’t take as long for lunch.

I had to stay two hours past my normal time today dealing with HR on the issue

LOL how low in the pecking order do you have to be to be forced to stay late to work with HR?

I'm boomer. I work from home more than I work in the office. My boss is okay with it because I get the work done. I go to the office 2-3 days a week 10:00-3:00. With today's technology there is no need to be chained to a damn desk. Hell, my son works tech support in a contact center. If he has Internet and cell coverage they don't give a shite where he is.

Personally, risk aversion, positive self regard, and concern for more vulnerable workers (health wise) would make an extremely good impression on me.

It's already being done. No reason to go to a place of work when it can be done from home. Living in the clouds bro.

If you ran ur own business and someone could truly do a job from their home, why would you pay that person US wages, when you could pay someone in India for less than half the cost to do it?

Two little millineal bitches approached me today wanting to ‘work from home’ until all this blows over. I know ‘working from home’ to them means paid vacation.

GROW UP AND GET TO WORK!!!!

FL state and municipality workers and Fed workers are being encouraged to telecommute, avoid air travel and frequently wash hands.

HR where I work is supposed to be putting out a memo to that effect tomorrow as well.

You're a douche, working from home is not a "paid vacation". Telecommuting is legit, cuts down on fossil fuel consumption, traffic congestion and exposure to corona.

I'm sorry that you can't work the shake machine from home.

You poor baby. Your workers (who you obviously treat with respect and regard) aren’t willing to risk their health/lives so you can look over their shoulder all day? They sound awful....

The same companies who's HR departments cut long term benefits/pensions in favor of 401k matching and then wonder why millennials change jobs more frequently. Loyalty is a two-way street.

Don’t know if this really applies here, but it’s the 3000# gorilla in corporate America today. Once the boomers finally get out of the workforce, there will be a huge gap in leadership positions. And business is going to have to decide what it wants to do to invest in growth.

Our HR department is sending out weekly emails with best practices (i.e., wash your fricking hands) and reminding us that they're monitoring the situation and we've had bottles of hand sanitizer appear all over the building, but so far no one in my company, for sure my department, is trying to take advantage.

IMO, most people need to be less concerned about Coronavirus and more concerned about their waistlines.
