Take a normal 8 hour work day with an hour lunch and add an hour and a half commute each way and you are gone for 12 hours a day. Not sure how people with kids live that way.
I’m not sure that’s the norm.
I’ve lived in the ATL metro area for 12 years. 3 different employers and my worst commute was an hour each way. My best was 20 minutes each way. I currently work remote but my on-site office is 40 minutes each way. That’s about average for the people in my office.
Contrast that to my mom, who lives east of the 10/12 split and commutes 30-35 minutes each way downtown. It’s not like it’s that much better. BR traffic can get kind of hideous too.
Sure, there are some people who miserably drive from one side of the loop to the other and spend 3 hours a day on the road, but nobody has to do that, at least not forever. At a minimum, you do it for a little while until you find something closer.

This is not a new trend at all. About 80% of my graduating class (MBA 1990) got jobs out of state. I went to Atlanta, got some experience, and made my way back home. A lot of people never come back and are very happy living other places. Do whatever is best for you and yours.

Fallguy when you've been to Houston, what areas of the city did you go for business and/or pleasure?
My sister lived inside the loop (HISD schools suck too), in the Woodlands and now in Austin. I have nothing against Texas. The landscape and weather are just pretty much like South LA. I'd much rather live in Tennessee or NC.

Exactly. I worked in Texas for years. Got a chance to come back and love it. Do what makes you happy

We didn't move out of La but we did move out of BR.
Best choice we could have ever made.

Lol. Liquor coming out with that post.
And it isn’t. I’ve only been out of college for close to 4 years, but there are just so many opportunities in central FL that it has been extremely easy to move up and quickly.

I appreciate you having that attitude about it. Good on you for the open mind.
The issue is that I've had multiple interactions with friends/family that simply can't wrap their head around the fact that I left the boot (and enjoy it elsewhere). It's met with a forced smile, and you can sense the judgment for "leaving."

Is this a trend in our state? Are most young people relocating for better job opportunities once they graduate college? Overall I just get the feeling more people are moving away than moving here.
Nah...it is pretty typical for people in their early-mid '20s to leave the state for a while....most eventually come back, though.

No doubt man.. Unforrunatley, not a ton of big companies in LA. Plus, wages are pretty poor compared to cost of living in the good areas of LA. I’ve always said that st.tammany 10% flat tax is flat out stealing.

I'm presently in limbo as to wether I'll be laid off or not. If so, me and the mrs. are headed out of the state.

Hope everything works out for you. It's tough being in limbo. Is your company downsizing?

Anthony Davis must’ve read this thread over the weekend.

I didn’t rack up over 100k in student loans to work for 30% under market value. So with that being said, yes I got out of that hell hole
Louisiana will always be home, but there’s so much more to the world other than LSU athletics and the great city of Baton Rouge

Pretty sad when people list tailgating as why they stay.
Means they let 7-8 Saturdays a year dictate where they live.

Agree but these days it’s more like 2 or 3 (if we’re lucky) Saturdays per season.
For example, the only real good games to tailgate for this season in BR were Ole Miss, Uga, and Bama. There’s too many trash OOC games.

I don't nobody really believes that just a reason cto justify not wanting to leave the state.
I was very hesitant about leaving Louisiana too. We came to Houston one weekend and met up with Beachdude and several others who post here, from Louisiana, and moved to TX. All loved Houston and gave great tips.
I live in NW Houston and it's crawling with people from Louisiana, almost a Cajun restaurant on every corner. Glwalk anywhere and will see more LSU shirts than A&M or TX. I wear LSU gear a lot and not a day goes by don't hear a Geaux Tigers. Get to talking when they moved to Houston, etc..
It wasn't until a full year of living in TX did we realize the big savings of car insurance, no state income tax, no tax on groceries, cheap electric, great schools, etc.. We noticed housing prices cheaper off the bat.
I would not do well in downtown Houston or even Heights area at all. Bit really like it out here in Cypress and in Bridgeland.
