Grew up in south Louisiana my entire life. Starting to get out of the state when my dad moved to southern California when I was 15 years old. I loved the woods and fishing but man the world has plenty too offer and staying in Louisiana wasn't an option after I saw what was out there. Loved LSU baseball camps during the summers and baseball games at old alex box on weekends but no way I would have stayed to raise kids and have a family.

Best posts in this thread. You would swear LA is Venezuela according to some of y’all. Does it have lots of problems and undesirables? Yes but let’s not act that Texas and Georgia or Arizona don’t.
My friends and I make plenty of money, have 2-5 kids, and would send our kids to Catholic school no matter what

There a lot of unique things about Louisiana, but with the dumb shite going on in BR/New Orleans lately, I plan on moving.

How many have to leave before the traffic lightens up?

Congrats on all that. You are an exception in LA, not a rule.

It depends on your preferences and what your job is exactly.
If you love a place and don't want to leave, you'll make it work. It wont matter if there are potentially better options.
Also, what is your job? If you own a business or do consulting, it doesn't matter what the industry looks like in your town. Your job is mostly separate from your environment.

Louisiana taxes are a bitch. As much a small I love Louisiana, I love money as well.

I'd leave in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the S/O

I can tolerate taxes if I see something in return for them. You pay insane insurance rates in Louisiana in part because of the horrible infrastructure issues there.

Preach. My wife and I are both from N.O. and we moved to DFW post college graduation. Did three years and both of us couldn’t wait to get back to NOLA. People are drawn to places for different things, but I much prefer my quality of life right now than I did in Texas.

I say I'd leave in a heartbeat, but every time I have the opportunity, I tend to balk. The reality is that I really love being here. I love my friends and my band and the food and the festivals and the general way of life. Literally the only things I don't like is the weather half the year and the job prospects. Louisiana gets a ton wrong, but the state gets some serious things right. Unfortunately, one cannot enjoy those things without a job to afford them a life here (or without leaching off the government as so many do).
When I talk about leaving here, I talk a big game, but if I were to leave here, I'd like to go some place with more enjoyable weather. I really hate the cold lake-effect snow, so that rules out the rust belt cities like Chicago. I really don't like Houston or DFW which just feel completely soulless and dull by comparison. The West Coast seems completely unaffordable, so to land a job out there that would make a move worthwhile seems like it would take an act of God.
It seems like I'm pretty much stuck here unless I want to give up and go to Houston like everyone else. The problem is other than offering jobs, Houston doesn't really offer me anything else, while also offering some serious drawbacks (I have to leave my band and all of my friends behind). Houston has the same shitty weather and the same shitty traffic, just with even more sprawl.

My friends and I joke that the only jobs in Louisiana are the jobs that a five year old would name. Doctor, lawyer, fireman, etc.
Most of my friends that stayed are doctors who want to be close to their parents. The majority of the rest are now in Dallas and Houston.

I like Texas so I don't want it to sound like I'm shitting on it because I'm not. That being said, Houston would be near the bottom of my list of places to relocate to.

Texas is moving further left every election cycle while LA is moving further right. After 2019 there will be only a few white democrats in the house and senate.
The LA house and senate will probably be almost all republican except in the majority black districts in the next 10 years

I went from a $90K condo in BR to a $420K house here
But, the quality of living, the overall lack of crime, trash, etc. Besides the cost of a home (and rent wasn't much more than BR, just the house prices when buying) things aren't expensive here. Home insurance is ridic cheap, as well as auto. Electricity is way cheaper for me. So, living expenses are comparable, besides homes.
And no state income tax

how's the job market in Naples? I haven't looked too hard at Florida, but living near the shore would be pretty sweet.
