wow

thats racist

I base this opinion on the experiences of a friend who lived out in the Portland area for about three years

he's from Houston and he says he encountered more racism from day 1 in Portland than he had his entire life up to that point in the South

People were actually asking him in line at a Starbucks probably had any members of his family been lynched

Had a family member stay in McMinnville (about an hour out of Portland). Great community.

but most of the people from the NW thrive on diversity

My high school counselor (a gazillion years ago) was from Idaho - she had never seen a black person until she moved to New Orleans, but that is why she moved to NOLA

Not sure why she worked at an all girls private school

No it's the thread for some self-righteous pinhead liberal in Utah who hadn't read the answers right in front of them

Portland isn’t hard, despite the negativity above. Way better than BR for example.

Oregon is such a conflicting area to me. I visited Oregon back in 2015 and went to Portland, Hood River, Mt. Hood, Seaside, Cannon Beach and Tillamook. We stayed 3 nights in Portland (last night just to be by the airport) in the suburbs. I enjoyed Portland but even back in 2015 the homelessness and gutter punks downtown were absolutely crazy.

I would never live in Portland proper. But Oregon as a state is one of the most beautiful state in the U.S. and is a state I would definitely love to spend more time in. I would just try to go to a farther out suburb at least somewhat away from Portland or go over to Vancouver, WA where you don't get the state income tax and you are far enough away from Portland to be away from the crazies. Best advise I can give.

Family member is in Coast Guard and will be stationed there. Just hoping to find an apartment in a good area. No kids, so schools are not an issue.

Look at Vancouver, WA. As mentioned, no income tax.
