Depends what speed the disposal is rated for.

You have to only put a few at a time and run a good bit of water behind them. I’ve stopped it with them when I just shoved a bunch and it clogged.

I always do eggshells. Put halved lemons in it to freshen it up.

I have heard the same.

After doing research: myth mostly busted

quote:

Ice cubes will by no means sharpen your disposal’s blades, but that doesn’t mean they should not be put down it. Ice cubes can actually be good for your disposal as they knock off any left over food bits on the blades. If you want even better cleaning results try making ice cubes out of lemon juice or vinegar to put down the disposal (don’t ingest them though!)

How would ice cubes sharpen a blade?

To clean your garbage disposal the proper way, combine ice with salt, which helps scrub the blades clean, and lemon to neutralize odors and create a fresh scent. Fill the disposal with ice cubes, a sprinkle of coarse salt such as rock or sea salt, and a few lemon wedges. Then turn on the cold water and run the disposal until the ice has cleared.

Garbage disposals should only be used for remnant particles, not a whole plate full of shite, in my opinion. If you can wipe the majority out of the bowl/plate with a paper towel in the trash, do it.

Tangential thought—my wife’s cousin in New York calls it an “insinkerator”, which pisses me off. It’s a fricking disposal or garbage disposal. That might be the brand name, but they’re no fricking Kleenex or Xerox.

Yes potato peels routinely clog disposals. Can you put them down one and not clog it? Absolutely, but needs to be slow and with a lot of water. If you peel a sack full of potatoes for say thanksgiving into the sink and then push them all into the disposal, that will absolutely clog it up.

Some skins, while running the water are ok. A bunch of them with little to no water, clog.

So I've wanted to write a message to the local residents of my town about what should and should not go down a disposal.

People my age (60+) think disposals are the greatest invention known to mankind. You can put anything down it.

Truth is, besides breaking you disposal, why are we sending all this matter to the Waste Water Treatment Plant i.e. Sewer Plant. Scores of miles of pipe, to then be treated and pumped into the Tchefuncte River.

Perhaps more to the dump, less to the WWTP would be better.

She's right, you can stick anything down it including sunflower seeds and egg shells but your dad will be getting a plumber's bill in a month or two.

When the dishwasher starts backing up laugh at her

Well, I've never had to call a plumber to empty my trash. So, if it can be scrapped off a plate, it goes in the trash.

It's my understanding that food waste is best put into a disposal as the tiny particles are used by aenerobic bacteria and converted either to fertilizer or used to produce methane for fuel. Composting is ideal, but if that is not something you do, putting food waste down a disposal is better than being hauled in a truck using fossil fuels and decomposing in a landfill. Some landfills have methane recovery, but not many, and those that do are nowhere near as efficient as those in wastewater treatment plants. Lots of this is dependent on what processes are in place in your area, but overall the best method is to compost, followed by using a disposal, and lastly dumping in the trash.
