Seems they started around 1992 in middle schools. I remember they sent out water filled pouches to "practice" on before doing the full roll out.
Nope. I graduated in 90 and we had the bag milk from the time I was in first grade till I graduated. Same school K - 12 in SW LA.

I remember when we first got them and the principle who was a nun told us we had to put out thumb over the straw then proceeded to not do that and take a shot of chocolate milk to the face.

The yeast rolls were so damn good. The garlic bread sticks were great also.

When you are done, blow up the bag, push the straw all the way through. Twirl that ho
We used to blow them up then stick our thumbs into them without popping it to make tits on it

I found out last week that my son's school has pouches of milk instead of cartons.

Nope, had mini cartons of milk and it was always an awesome day when you got to pick chocolate milk instead of 2%.
They didn't care for us.
Most kids just always drank the chocolate milk.

I remember them. Also remember the milk being spoiled more often than not. Think we gave on school lunches by 6th grade and packed our own.
Yep….i got a pouch of spoiled milk and threw up in front of my second-grade class. Never ate another bite of food from the school cafeteria.

We had small cartons from Kleinpeter Farms.
Are they still around?

Who remembers pouches of milk with yellow straws with school lunches back in the day?
We had pouch milk in Da Berry.

Hell yeah son! I remember when someone came to school to show everyone how to put the straw in the pouch. Put your thumb on the top and stick it in.
The idea was to save space because milk cartoons would pile up quick in the garbage can.
In high school, a few weeks leading up to Mardi Gras they would serve king cake.. And it was good. I used to trade my milk to a dude for his king cake. Anyone else went to a HS were the lunch room had its own economy? Certain foods were worth more than others. I remember sometimes they would have leftovers and when the lunchroom lady would announce it, it was first come first serve and you had to have an empty plate. People would scrape their food in someone else's plate, run up to get seconds, then scrape their food back in their plates..

Did not live in BR, and we had them.

They were pretty gross. Not sure if the milk just sucked or the plastic gave it a weird flavor. The white milk was undrinkable and the chocolate milk was only tolerable...not very enjoyable like normal chocolate milk.

We had them in Terrebonne Parish public schools in early 2000s. Chocolate of course was the best

I can still remember exactly what the white milk tasted like.

We had them in Vernon Parish starting around 1990.
Once you had it fully inflated and double poked, you could pull down and pop the corner with your thumb and it would sound like a .22 round being fired.
That trick spread like wild fire and they shut it down quick when the cafeteria sounded like a war zone.
We were so desperate, we'd sneak the empty bags out to play with them later. The recess area was then littered with them.
All in all, it was easy enough to use even for elementary children and probably saved a ton of money for the school district.

I remeber when the cartons were replaced by the pouches. I never liked pouches milk. Always tasted funny. Likely because it was cheapo

Another high quality trick.
While silly, it goes to show you the innovation that was present in our youth. Who would've imagined the ideas kids would come up with if you gave them a plastic bag, a capri sun straw and a lot of time.
