If the things property taxes paid for were actually done, fine. But our schools and roads are terrible, and our 1st responders shouldn’t need a 2nd job to live. I understand there are states that do it right. But not Louisiana. Or probably anywhere in the south.

a law abiding tax paying citizen, I truly don’t understand why there is a need to pay taxes on a property that’s paid for.
Excellent example of specious reasoning.

absolutely loathe property tax time, but at least it's itemized in a way that shows you what amounts are going to what purpose
In Florida we get a Trim Report that breaks down what portion goes to schools, hospitals, airports, recreation fields, parks, roads, city and county government. I’m not sure I get that from other properties I own in other states.
I have attended municipal budget meeting and budget planning meetings. It’s very helpful to understand this process rather than hating on something you just don’t understand.
I think the biggest complaint people have with property taxes is the return on the dollar. In Louisiana and Florida I’d argue it’s not a great return. In Maryland it’s better, but I’d say that Colorado and Idaho provide an excellent return on the dollar.

Louisiana has really cheap property taxes but I would agree that residents get very little in return for their dollar.

Even better is paying tax on a car, paying the giv for a license to operate that car then paying the government again for a sticker that deems it operable

The part that really sucks is that you can pay for a house and over the years it could appreciate in value to the point where you can’t afford to pay taxes on it anymore and have to move.

Thats why older people can't afford to stay in the house that's been paid off for years. After a certain age, you should be exempt from property taxes.

I think a conveyence tax is the oldest tax known. Kings and Barons would charge taxes just for traveling down a road.

It’s the main reason the government can not allow home prices to decrease.
Our bloated local money laundering systems, I mean governments, are already spending wayyy more than they bring in. Imagine if property taxes dropped a couple of points because values did?

Why? Are you still using public goods 'after a certain age"? If yes, you should still pay tax.

Most municipalities have property tax freezes once you get a certain age for your primary residence. This isn't a perfect solution, but still important.

Old people consume all if not more of the majority of services paid for by property taxes. In many cases they get shielded from the school tax.
What really makes this suggestion ridiculous though is that everyone could put the deed in a parents name making fraud and abuse simple. Secondly, the bulk of the property tax burden would fall on young couples just starting out in life. If young people are already facing a hard time getting into to the home ownership demographic this idea would greatly exacerbate the problem.

Turning 65 this year and just learned that I can defer property tax. I will not have to stroke a check. My children will hate me when they sell the property, but the property has appreciated so much over the last five years I have been in it.

Property tax and all taxes minus income tax should be abolished for a consumption tax.
Buy a lot of shite, pay a lot of taxes. Save and dont spend and don’t pay.
Buy a $40 million yacht, pay a lot of taxes.
Income tax should just be enough to cover necessary services. Hell maybe there’s a way to get rid of income tax too

Then what the flying frick are income taxes for?
State and Federal
Now, sales tax and property tax is where you cough up blood (at state and local) and should flare up.
And keep on efficient federal govt too.

This does not logically follow. Are you not using any public goods such as utilities, parks, roads, schools, etc. as a saver?

What is your definition of "necessary services"?
The taxation question is much more complicated than the OT geniuses like to think of it.
If you don't like your tax regime you should get more involved with local and state politics. That is where you can have the most impact on limiting or eliminating taxes you do not like.

Property tax is a sceme to tax wealth in a way that makes the middle class pay the most. Add investments, business holdings, trust funds, etc. in some small matter and we could balance all governmental budgets.
Big money and the politicians they own will never allow it.

Honestly, property tax is the one I'm most comfortable paying. In our area, it is high. Keeps out people who don't see value in paying more each year for an equivalent house. Schools are great, parks are clean and continually updated if the equipment breaks, medians and such are kept up, etc.. I realize this is the exception though.

I won't defend Oweo, but that's not where Oweo gets his money, assuming he's on government assistance. Your property taxes are going to police, fire, etc. Some people just love that shite. Most small towns and cities in La could do without a police department and let the sheriff's office handle it. But oh hell no, we can't do that.

Amazing how all of these things existed before property taxes.
