I live in Zachary and although it’s better than most it’s still not a great public school system. I pulled my 12 yr old daughter out and put her in private. Been in Zachary since 2003 and the last 5-6 years it has been going down hill. White flight is starting to really hit.

We put her in Silliman in Clinton and it’s been great. They have a waiting list mostly from parents in Zachary.

In addition to having a better pool of students they sell out to teach to pass these stupid standardized tests. Sure these kids are good at these tests but they SUCK at anything practical in the classroom.

Also, this grading scale, holy frick. My GPA would look a whole lot different if this grading scale was used.

I would agree 100%. These scores are manipulated and the schools cheat.

But would you send your kids to any public school in Bossier over South Highlands, middle magnet, Byrd Shreve or Magnet High if you had the choice?

No.

Bossier should have a magnet program, but they are still chugging along with the neighborhood schools. This is a mistake.

If given the choice knowing what I know now, I would choose Dutchtown High for 2 of my kids and Baton Rouge High for the other 2.

BR High is a great academic school but it's not a good fit for everyone. I wouldn't have enjoyed going there in HS.

A magnet school in bossier would kill it. That city is hungry for something like that

The Byrd model could work.

I never truly trust rankings like these, becasue far too much touchy feely things like “diversity is strength” often goes into it and schools that aren’t diverse get penalized….

Straight ACT rankings for open enrollment schools

1 Mandeville
2 Byrd
3 Northshore
4 Saline
5 Lee high
6 Dutchtown
7 Fountainbleau
8 Reosepine
9 Benton
10 Zachary

Paints a different picture huh?

And this is the biggest kicker, the St. Tammany public high schools had 13 combined national merit semi finalists

The rest of the open enrollment public schools in the entire state combined had 5…..

St. Tammany has gone down the shitter

I had a conversation last night with a former St Tammany school teacher (western side of the parish), who left for a Catholic school. She said the lack of discipline is appalling. There is no consequences for students behavior and the administration doesn’t back up the teachers. When teachers do meet with the parents, the parents blame the teachers for discipling the kids. I’ve also heard the same thing from a pair of St Bernard teachers recently as well, so it’s not just a St Tammany issue.

We need discipline in our schools. It’s hard enough to teach without the distractions of unruly kids.

25% made of ACT score. Total horseshite when the state requires every kid to take it and counts each towards the schools/parish score. Every special ed kid takes it, every ESL kid takes it, and every kid who has 0 interest in attending college and has 0 interest in doing well on it as it in no way, shape or form affects him.

This is why despite being in that catchment area, I send my kids to private schools.

Looks like St Tammany is moving big time down the list.

Because a large number of the best students go to numerous private schools.

West St. Tammany is going up and east at. Tammany is going down

It isn’t really all that surprising.

Slidell used to score better than they do now. Those kids have either gone private in the recent 10-15 years or moved west
