Home Depot in Lake Charles is trying to get away from self-checkout. The manager wants it gone due to theft but corporate is fighting him. Now he has people "assist" you in self-checkout defeating the purpose of it since they scan everything for you and only let you punch the screen to complete the transaction.

I was at Home Depot in BR last week and it was the same. Only 2 of the “self checkout” stations were open and both had attendants scanning the items.

shite guy, dog food is expensive. That was probably a 60-80 dollar item you "forgot" to scan

You put an unpaid laborer at a task they are untrained for, and you expect it to be done correctly?

How much training do you think an unpaid laborer needs to scan a bar code of the red laser, or find the item on a touch screen and let it sit on the scale.

Walmart too is opening more cashier isles and is said to be considering doing away with it on a national level or at least reducing it greatly.

As someone mentioned, many Walmart stores are remodeling to allow more self checkout. The one nearest me just finished, and I’d estimate that half of cashier checkout has been eliminated.

If they go back now, it will be very expensive.

Funny how corporate is fighting them, yet it looks like LC, Kenner, and Br are all saying F that. Hadn’t been to Harahan in a while, but sure it’s the same

When these stores do their cost/benefit analysis I wonder how they determine how much shrinkage from self checkout and how much from the register. Ran to HD before the freeze to get a few items, so a guy w a full cart try to jump the line to one of the self-checkouts open. Lady told him that’s not how it works, he has to get in line. Dude looked at her and just rolled out w the full cart.

I am just going off of what the assistant manager here told me. Maybe the managers are teaming up and sharing ideas? IDK

I forgot to pay for a box of cereal and a bag of chips the other day. I was putting bags into my cart while still pulling items out to scan and bag. The items just got hidden behind the other bags. I didn't notice until I was at my car putting my groceries away. I didn't go back inside to pay for them, so technically I stole them. I felt less guilty since it was store brand.

It made me think about the $6 of groceries I stole. It would just take 2 people doing that every hour to pay an employee.

A year later, they are going to 90% in-person cashier. Asked the GM about it and she said theft and that "people want someone else checking them out" (they don't).

Yea it seems some in here are saying their Walmart is going all self-checkout but I have noticed more cashiers in the two I go to and the rumor is Walmart is looking to scale it back. Who knows but I prefer self-checkout.

Someone told me the other day if you use self checkout at Wal-Mart, scan all your items but save the most expensive for last. Before you scan the last item, click pay on the screen and say "Oh, I forgot something" and try to scan it, it will beep normally but the screen will say "item not found". Just hit ok and move on your way like you didn't see the message.

For the record, I have NOT done this. I'm not getting my face plastered all over Facebook by the PD looking for me.

For posting about a hypothetical misdemeanor on a semi-anonymous website under a handle?

You better trust this guy. He is absolutely a professional at posting on a semi-anonymous website under a handle.

Last time I was at Costco the self checkout line was three times as long as the regular lines. Doesn’t make much sense for how fast Costco lines move, unless you want to do some selective scanning.

Yet depending on your race, you can walk into a Home Depot and walk out with anything without being harassed. Makes perfect sense…:/

This is why we cant have nice things. I much prefer self check and shop more often now that I dont have to wait in a long line. If I have to go back to that, I will make in store purchases much less frequently.

To anyone that thinks you're justified for not scanning an item or two because the saved labor costs, your ethical/moral compass is broke. You're not stealing from some faceless corporation. You are costing fellow consumers and working citizens with stock and mutual funds. You might as well be stealing elderly people's SS checks seeing how many of those funds are held in people's retirement accounts.

Here's a PSA - if you have a cart full of shite, dont be a dick and go to the regular checkout line
