What if he wants to spend it on the watch?

Why?

I don’t get some of these comments. Someone who is in the market for a watch like that generally has made an assessment of what they want and what they’re willing to spend.

I’m just giving them options. I honestly don’t really give a shite what they do or if they just burn the money in their fire pit. It’s their choice.

I don't like either. Get 2 Tudor Black Bays.

Yes, the Rolex will hold its value. But anybody who knows watches knows that Rolex is mostly the name. You're paying $15k for a $5k watch.

How so? I've been wearing a Sub since the mid-90's (I won it for sales achievement in my job) and have never once heard make a comment about it along those lines and I wear it almost every day. I would question anyone who would care what anyone else wears, drives or spends their money on, if they can afford it. It comes across as being very insecure.

This is what is known as the second stage of Rolex appreciation. When someone develops a little watch knowledge they generally realize Rolex is not the best watch in the world (which is stage one). They then proceed to neg Rolex with their newly found knowledge. What they don't realize is Rolex makes basically the best mid-tier watches on the planet. There are others that are basically as good but when it comes to a daily wear watch that you can wear without worry and will require limited maintenance and will outlast your grandchildren a Rolex is hard to beat. Slow evolutionary design changes ensure they are timeless and they make arguably the most reliable and robust 3 hand mechanical movements and they along with a couple of others are at the very top of warrantied accuracy.

But, I don't know watches so take what I said any way you like.

Obtuse, I need to post a pic of my current collection and get yours’ and Broke’s opinions on what direction you’d go next.

Also, scored a Explorer II (216470) at the very beginning of the shutdowns in March 2020 for about $5k less then what they’re going for right now. Such an awesome piece. Only regret is not buying more cuz I correctly predicted the pricing would bounce back quick which it did.

I think for the average guy out there, at least those that appreciate the finer things in life, the Sub is the perfect watch.

While I agree with everything you said, my issue is that $15k is not the price of a mid-range stainless steel watch.

Let's unpack that because I am tired of talking about COVID.

I tend to think of watches in 4 tiers. Tiering is somewhat divisive in the watch world but there is still a general consensus despite people still enjoying the discussion.

I see the first tier as affordable watches which WUS sorta defines as under $1k but I push it up to 2k especially for more complicated watches. This arguably is the most fun tier since most people can buy and sell watches in this range without dedicating a lot of money to what may not be a main hobby for them. I do know people with 100 or more than 200 watches all very inexpensive but love that about them. The growth of the microbrands in the last 10 years has grown the segment and larger companies like Timex are taking advantage. Seiko for example seems to be feeling the pressure of a market they owned and are going more upscale to the delight and chagrin of different groups.

The next tier for me is entry-level luxury usually from established brands and runs from about 1500 to 5000 give or take. Lots of great stuff in here with Tudor being an excellent example.

Skipping mid tier for the moment you then have high-end which include Haute Horlogerie. Generally about 12k on the low end but a lot of watches priced above that are not high end for various reasons.

Mid tier is sorta the 5-12k range. That covers all the bread an butter Omega, Rolex and similar brand stainless watches. You can spend over $100k on a midtier made in precious metal and gem-set. Some may consider that high-end but the watchmaking is mid-tier. Nothing wrong with likely a platinum Daytona for example Some people think it is crazy but I don't if you like them, I have a WG Sub and a rare platinum Planet Ocean.

The thing about the 15K price tag for some Rolex 3 hand watches is that is secondary market. The only stainless watches Rolex currently sells at or over 15k is the Sky-Dweller at 14.8 and the Yachtmaster II at ~19k but they are complicated movements. The secondary market pricing is crazy and it just keeps getting worse. It is a bubble but everytime their is an indication it will pop it just starts going back up. ALl this makes them hard to buy from the dealer because everyone wants to buy them at retail. The big problem with Rolex is availability but that is a gray market dealer issue. There are PLENTY of unworn Rolexes in the market to satisfy all the current buyers but those dealers are as a unit setting the market. I keep thinking they will have to fold their hand but the ones that need money just sell them to other dealers who are happy to pay to prevent a drop in the price.

Rolex good Rolex availability bad.

If someone wants a Rolex get on the list with multiple dealers you will get one you just have to wait. In the meantime dabbling in the affordable range will scratch some of the itch and one is likely to find something they really enjoy wearing from time to time.

I am biased because I own a Seamaster. I like the band it looks like stainless rope to me and seems nautical.
