Not sure about Russia but Ukraine has an explanation. Parents had to pick what children lived and died. The better looking ones got to live and pass on those traits

That's horrible. What parent would choose based on looks?
You have to choose based on which child minded the most, or was most well behaved. MAYBE which one was smarter.
Of course, that's if both children were the same sex, because it goes without saying you pick the male over the female.

The lifestyle of the average Russian male is not conducive to health and fitness.

Probably because most of the male population was decimated about 75-80 years ago. Gene pool probably became more like a puddle.

Read up on the Holodomor. Terrible time in their history. As far as choosing a kid by looks, I believe it to be more of a subconscious choice
