To be fair, many metal bands deliberately promoted that image for marketing purposes although I don’t think any really were. Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, KISS, Ozzy, many more.

This, specifically Marilyn Manson and the guy from NIN. They started out recording in the actual home where Sharon Tate and the others were murdered, because why? To be edgy? I don’t know.

That was Geraldo’s first “primetime” special, way before his Al Capone tomb BS. It was a big deal when it came on, as he was at the height of his career

I transferred to a private school in middle school, and I was reading the handbook where it specifically banned Dungeons and Dragons in the same section as alcohol and drugs, etc.

This was 1999, I had no freaking idea what D+D was. But it sure scared them 10-15 years prior.

So, do you remember this happening during the 80’s? Did you ever experience anything related to Satanic Panic?

Okay, so I understand that some Netflix show called "Stranger Things" recently covered this topic and convinced all young people to believe a false narrative that the so-called "Satanic Panic" was a massive thing in the 1980s.

Yes, around 1980, some woman and her therapist did write some book that she was Satanically ritually abused, and then a couple years later another woman wrote a book claiming that her son died because of playing D&D. A daycare was also accused of ritually abusing its students at one point. Further more, Richard "The Night Stalker" Ramirez and Sean Sellers said that they were Satanists when they murdered their victims. People like Geraldo Rivera covered the topic on their TV shows, and some rock bands responded by playing up using Satanic symbols and imagery as part of their act to appear cool and play into the teen angst market. But that's about it. So, yes, Satanism was discussed a LITTLE more in the 1980s than it is these days, but it certainly wasn't as big of a deal as whatever this "Stranger Things" episode that young people keep talking about apparently claimed it was.

TL; DR: Your average, every day church didn't make a big deal about it at all, but a few individual fundamentalist churches may have discouraged their flock from listening to heavy metal music or trick or treating.

I remember the stuff about heavy metal but I never met anyone who thought there were satanists everywhere.

Never heard that before...ever. Had all of their albums in the 1980s. Never picked up an occult vibe ever. Just a bunch of Aussies jamming.

Also was a KISS fan way back in the day. Again, we just liked their rock-n-roll music, but some said that KISS stood for Knights In Service to Satan.

Please

I think that was the theme of a WSP Halloween run at UNO Lakefront Arena back around the turn of the century, Satanic Panic. Opened up with cover of Sympathy for the Devil if I’m sure.

Come at me, ironically anti-Panic SEC bros.

It was a bit of self fulfilling prophecy to an extent. I was a teenager in the 80’s and the televangelist were attacking heavy metal and dungeons and dragons pretty hard. You heard a lot on the news about those being signs of satanic cults. Which was ridiculous because rock and roll is just rock and roll and has always been attacked since Elvis first swayed his hips and dungeons and dragons were all just a bunch of nerds.
However since it was on news all the time stupid teenagers made up their local tall tales. Every town had that old abandoned house or old cemetary or some dead end road out in the woods where supposed satanic cults met. And heaven forbid some stray animal died or was killed..then that must be the work of some cult.

Man I miss the 80’s.

Classic.

I remember one of those on the Antichrist or something from when I was a kid that was funny at the time but as I grew up was relatively accurate.

Late 70’s they had rumors that there were satanic rituals off either Frenchtown, Hoo shoo too, or another rural road.

Never seen these satanic rituals.

At that time being in high school I had to investigate the situation and act like the devil worshipers.
Really high school kids drinking beer, partying, and of course had devils lettuce smoking going on.

Then they had church group Christian music chicks trying to lure guys to go to Christian Music Concerts.
Heck, they were also partying drinking beer, smoking the devils lettuce, and partying. These young ladies were just as bad as the other girls.

I think it was a big excuse for my generation of young people to party.

I bet some of those young ladies wearing no panties, black leather shirt skirts, leather bra like top, partying hard, and having sex turned into Karen’s today.

Just teenagers being teenagers.

Satanic Panic would be an awesome message board name.

Sister De Lourds told us we were going to Hell for listening to Heavy Metal. Friend of mine's mother threw away his Iron Maiden album. That's about it. Pretty good thread though.

I was forced to listen to a bunch of songs backwards in the 80’s, which scrambled my brain and made me scared there was a satanic temple underneath our house that we were renting from a former priest. That did far more damage than any real satanism could have done.

Have to love churches talking about the evils of the world corrupting your children … meanwhile some priest diddle away.

There's no telling how much those sleazy grifters lined their own pockets with donations from idiots who thought they were saving their kids from Satan. Organized religion can be similar to government. Manufacture a crisis, then raise money to combat the crisis that you've created.

I think this was more of a rural phenomenon. Growing up in New Orleans in the 1980s, getting killed or mugged by a thug, just like today, was a much bigger issue. The kids who played D&D were just nerds, and the metal heads were just an evolution of their greaser parents.
