FWIW, I too thought there might be an immigration angle just because of the CBP references in articles I read in passing.
However, I suspect CBP just has the best search resources in the area and it was all hands on deck.

I would agree with the search resources angle. I can’t see an illegal who just got past the CBP being so concerned about hiding the body this well if she was murdered during a break in or robbery.
