Look, I would never live in a miserable dump like Baton Rouge, and I understand why you leeches would take issue with people trying to manage themselves and get a return on their investment in the tax structure, but damn, you're mad.

Most everyone in Baton Rouge cares about their quality of life and education. A plight not unique to the st georgers. Its just somehow they saw a huge tax base to coopt and attempt to proclaim their own.
If BR is such crap then why is the economic outlook so good? And, why then TLSU don't you just not look back?

Attacking the person and not the argument exposes a weak point of view.

Like any place where people live, the municipality has the duty to keep its citizens happy, or it experiences certain consequences by not doing so. The idea that people should have to hang around in misery under the guise of, "well you should help change something!" is beyond absurd. If the people who reside there want to change things by doing it on their own, then why not?
I have no dog in the fight, and I don't care. I just find the logic that "you should suffer with the rest of us" to be comical, especially considering the tax revenue and expenditure distribution.

Here's my big gripe about City of Baton Rouge's attitude about St. George.
St George: "We are dissatisfied with the level of services we receive in proportion to the taxes we pay. We feel like we are a colony in service to Baton Rouge, and we think we can manage ourselves better than Baton Rouge can. So we are going to form our own city."
Baton Rouge: "That's ridiculous. We are stronger together, not apart. And instead of address, or ever LISTEN to your concerns, we are going to attack and cripple your efforts to organize through whatever political and public relations means we can. We are going to make YOU the bad guy, and after we win... we sure as hell won't listen to your concerns then. In fact, we'll probably punish you for it. We need your money. We are not giving it up. But we don't need your problems. You can keep those."
After the dust settles, and the St. George incorporation movement (likely) fails, NO ONE in City of Baton Rouge's leadership will stop and say, "What can we do for St. George to make this better? I mean, they came THIS CLOSE to incorporating. How can we fix this so they won't want to try it again?" They will be too busy taking their victory lap to stop and think about that.
It's always St. George that needs to "come together" with the Baton Rouge community and give for the common good. That spirit does NOT swing the other way, and that's what pisses off the St. Georgians.

Congrats Baton Rouge, you win. Nobody will ever have a good school district and I hope those frickers at city hall are really happy about that.

Exactly. BR's response has never been about how incorporation would be bad for the people of St. George, it's solely been about how incorporation would hurt BR. If I live in St. George, why should I forego my self-interest just to appease BR's self-interest?
I haven't always agreed with posters like LSURussian, but I applaud his efforts of at least arguing why incorporation would hurt the people of St. George. It's certainly more pertinent than the BR city leaders sob stories as to how "THEY" would suffer if the incorporation happened.
At the end of the day, St. George doesn't happen. Kip Holden, John Delgado, the Metro Council, and groups like Together BR grandstand and pound their chest about how they "saved" BR. Staus quo (including the horrible school system) keeps on keepin' on. BR doesn't change for the better because of it. They just take a sigh of relief that they were able to prevent themselves from becoming Jackson, MS for a little while longer.

Spot on. Probably the best summary I've ever read on the situation.

I'm still voting for St. George if/when it goes on the ballot. So what's changed? Smaller budget? I still feel better off on our own.
Posted on 4/24/14 at 9:51 am to BeerMoney
If St G somehow happens, they say BR will turn to shite. So, most of it is already shite.
Posted on 4/24/14 at 9:56 am to BeerMoney
It's just plain sad if St. George doesn't become a separate entity. Guess my son will be going to private school.

Yeah I ride around St. George and all that comes to mind is poor poor St. George. Look how shitty all these roads and infrastructure the City Parish built to house and facilitate all these shitty looking malls and restaurants and subdivisions are..
And I think if only the citizens and leadership of BR would vote out of office all those Federal Court judges that tell them what to do with the public school system all these decades…

It should just illustrate to you the potential of St. George.
If I were a St. George resident, I would be very confident that local government that allows me to fix the major problems that exist will only make St. George even better. The money flow and growth that has happened in St. George over the past 20 years would only continue at a higher rate.
I would want to be a part of that.
The fact that you, as a non-resident of St. George would be jealous would have no bearing at all on my decision. In fact, I would simply invite you to move into the area. Many will do just that.

St. George knows it can do better on its own. Your excuse for the current state of the school system, even if accurate, is irrelevant to that fact.

So if St. George doesn't happen, then these businesses now screwed themselves, correct?
