That used to be true but they dumped a ton of money into the surrounding area over the last 15 years so it's really nice as far as tailgating. But it is on the edge of town so there's no bars/restaurants to really service the area, in walking distance. Unlike a town like Athens where you don't even need to tailgate, you can party before/after the game in the downtown area and it's walking distance to/from the stadium. I'm getting off topic. You should be a Carolina fan over a Clemson fan. Trust me on this. It's not just SEC bias. I also lived there for three years, and am a UGA fan, and can say the cock fans are the better breed of human.

I mean, we’re into everything that’s going on here, so maybe? We’re going to Kenny Chesney at the end of May, just booked our ferry tickets from downtown this morning.

We'll be there May 18-22, you two are more than welcome to make a day trip down. We have no definite day to day plans, just beach drinking. There will be two 5 year olds though, so we won't be going too hard.

Also, I was starting to lean Gamecocks for my in state football allegiance because it's closer than Clemson and an easy drive, but then I talked to a fellow building resident who went to Georgia...and he said "have you ever been to Columbia?", "it's a shithole", "I don't think there's a "nice" part of Columbia", "the stadium is off campus and it's all pavement around it", and a few other things. That soured me a bit, but still may check it out for the Gators game this fall. Will force Bruco to come down from Charlotte and join me.
Georgia fans, especially those in Charleston, have a visceral hatred for USC. Don't let that shade your view.
Columbia is a fantastic college town with a ton to do. The stadium and area around it, as Deeprig said, has been vastly improved in the last few years.
Take a weekend trip and go see a Carolina baseball game. Columbia in late spring is absolutely perfect.
And as a visitor/new resident, be like Coach Lasso: be curious, but not judgmental. SC is a phenomenal place to live. Enjoy it for what it is, not what it isn't.

the answer is definitely Hymans. It’s funny because the travel board also list that as a place that you have to go to if you’re in Charleston. I just shake my head and laugh.
I’ve still never been there largely because of what I’ve read on this board.

I’m in. I’m already a S. Carolina homer. Bruco said “you basically became a local in 12 hours”.
I need to get in with some of the gamecock fans on the board and crash their tailgate. Need to find someone with one of those rail cars.

Sounds like this Georgia fan hasn't spent much of any time in Columbia. Find me a city with Columbia's population that has zero ghettos. There's tons of nice areas in Columbia. Shandon and Forest Acres are the first that come to mind, and the Vista has more restaurants and bars than all of Pickens and Oconee Counties combined. The stadium is off-campus, but is literally a mile from parts of campus, and as RoyalAir said, is night and day from what it was when I was an undergrad. Not to mention, we actually support all of our athletic programs at USC. There aren't near as many t-shirt fans as there would be at Clemson, Bama and UGA, because we don't win anything of note, but you won't find a more loyal bunch than Gamecock people.

Seconded
Clemson fans generally should be euthanized or at least sterilized before breeding.
USC(e) fans are simply happy we (the SEC) let them in the club.

They're Cockabooses.
Scrooster has one, and there a few other guys on this board who either have one, or have connections to one.
When it gets closer to football season, post on tRant that you're headed in and have tickets. Ask if anyone is willing to show you a good time. Carolina hospitality is real, and most owners are down to let you hang and share a beer.

My son and his wife moved there a year ago for their medical internships. They enjoy it. There are decent beaches and other waterfront areas nearby, the golf scene is good and the food is good. Pickle ball is big for the younger crowd. Golden Retrievers seem to be the pet of choice. They had one when they moved their and whenever they walk her there are lots of other people walking theirs.
We've been to visit, and it is a very nice city. There are good restaurants (my favorites were Royal American which look for all the world like a dive bar but has excellent food and the Edgar Allen Poe themed restaurant.)
As a big history buff, I was a little disappointed in Fort Sumter, but the battery area is very nice.
What others have said about the trains blocking things is true too. You have to kind of schedule around them.

To properly frame the reference, so to speak.

That would be awesome and likely get me buying merch by the end of the day

We’re just up the street from the medical campus. A bunch of those folks live in our building.
We had 80 weiner dogs for the weenie walk. Good times. I’m dead center of that picture in the red shirt.

I just ordered from the Dominos that’s below you. The hangover is real today

Fake news. It's the other way around. Sure, during the Spurrier years there was some hate, but it wasn't about the gamecocks, it was an extension of our hate for Florida.
Gamecocks are the ones who viscerally hate UGA. It's the most one-sided rivalry in football. UGA doesn't give a frick about USC. But UGA is USC's second biggest rival.

Talk about fake news.
Our second biggest rival is UNC. Y'all ain't even in third place.
Don't hijack this man's thread.

I said nothing but positive things about USC regarding this man's question about whether to adopt USC or Clemson. Then you came in with fake news about UGA. Why don't you stop hijacking this man's thread?
One-sided rivalry on display, right here folks.
