In 2025, NOLA had the lowest homicide rate in 50 years.
Murder, for example, fell 3% between 2024 and 2025. But compare 2025 to 2022, and murders fell 55%. (Outside of the Jan. 1 terror attack, which claimed 14 lives, murders fell 14% between 2024 and 2025.)
Armed robberies fell 28% during that time frame, the department says, though that improves to a 70% decrease between 2022 and 2025.

The print one probably AI and just used averages for the numbers. I didn't read or watch either because the only news there is where it happened. Otherwise just change the date.

True. Not just tourists. Locals, too. But they know the risk.

You can’t in good faith send out of towners there - which makes it awkward that it’s featured in every tourist guide
The amount of Airbnb's around there was comical. Seeing a group of Bachelorette's with penis crowns walking around all sparkly and drunk.
On no gurl....what is you doin'

They simply cannot exist where peace would, with their random and imprecise violence leaving may innocent bystanders dead and maimed.
Or terrorized. Or dissuaded from visiting.
It’s not just the murder count. I don’t care much about that because most homicides are drug or domestic related.
I care more about getting mugged, jumped, or assaulted. I care about my car being safe when unattended.
I care about not feeling uneasy when I’m in the Big Easy.
You can’t solve those problems easily. I really have no idea how. It’s predominantly young Black males committing these crimes and causing these problems. Do you ship them all off to a compound? Pump more money into education?
Seems hopeless to me until it is a grassroots effort from within the community that spawns these kinds of people. But what’s the incentive for them to change? And is the knowledge base there for them to even try?

Don’t really have the desire to go through the stats year by year. But this is from AI. It aligns with three other AI sources. Bottom line is that New Orleans is safer and it’s been in 20 years. Or let’s just meet in the middle and say less dangerous.
Here’s a compiled list of available/reported total shootings (fatal + non-fatal where specified; approximate or noted where data is partial/inconsistent) from 2000 to 2025, drawing from NOPD, Jeff Asher/AH Datalytics, Metropolitan Crime Commission, and media reports:
• 2000–2010: Limited specific annual shooting totals publicly available in aggregated form; gun violence was elevated post-Katrina (2005–), with non-fatal shootings often in the 300–600+ range during high periods, but exact year-by-year figures are not comprehensively archived in public sources for this query.
• 2011–2018: Similarly sparse; reports indicate hundreds annually, trending down from 2010s peaks but still high (e.g., often 400+ in mid-2010s).
• 2019: Around 300–400 (low point aligning with 120–122 homicides).
• 2020: Rise begins; ~400+ (pandemic surge).
• 2021: Significant increase; reports of 500+ incidents/victims in peaks (e.g., partial data showed sharp rises early in year).
• 2022: High; ~482 shootings reported (per some analyst compilations during the post-Katrina high violence year with 265–266 homicides).
• 2023: Decline starts; ~300–400 range (aligning with ~193 homicides).
• 2024: Sharp drop; non-fatal shootings declined ~40% from prior, total shootings estimated ~300–350 (with ~112 fatal shootings and ~200 non-fatal).
• 2025: 260 total shootings (NOPD year-end; historic low). This breaks down to 89 fatal shootings (down 21% from 2024’s 112) and 194 non-fatal shootings (down 3% from 2024’s ~200). Note: Some sources exclude the Jan. 1 Bourbon Street attack fatalities from standard shooting counts if non-gun, but most include gun-related violence.

Did not know this re the movie. Much respect for her and the restaurant. It’s well-known. I just won’t go into those areas. In fact, I avoid the city except to drive to work and back home.
