Where are you now? Where did you abandon your family and retreat to?
Cracker, you really are special aren't you? Show me where in this thread where you suggested I stay with my family? Everyone said, "get your family out". That was never an option and it was never the question I posted to the board. You want to criticize me now in hindsight, great. I will lose sleep tonight because I disappointed Cracker with the decision I made. My ticket was bought in Nov. 2021 this is not about "retreating". I had critical health and financial issues to deal with in the states. I had to gather things for my lawyers to get my early retirement. I did not have a visa to stay in Ukraine and I had to decide if I was going to screw all that up, stay in Ukraine illegally just in case Putin decided to invade after having troops on the border for almost a year. I made the choice to leave and I regret it. Does it make you feel better to make comments like that to me?

I say again, may these fricking cowards running these governments have all hells wrath fall upon them both living and dead.
It really is insane. People are sheep and they follow lying governments to point of killing and being killed.
I John 5: 19 We know that we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.
The book of revelation talks about the end of these world governments in the battle of Armageddon.
In the lord's prayer Jesus tells us "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven". Jesus is telling us to pray for the end of these worldly governments that are under Satan's influence.

Thanks for the updates. A lot of us are following your story and hoping/praying that your wife, baby, and stepson get out.

Thank you Rick. It actually does me good to talk about it even on a TD thread. lol. It is on my mind a lot obviously and it gives me a chance to get some of those thoughts out of my head.
I think the majority of the posters have been supportive and sympathetic like yourself and I appreciate their thoughts and prayers. Not to mention, I have gotten some helpful advice.
Thanks to everyone for your concern.

You just need to know that there's gonna be crackers in this thread, because the OT knows no boundaries and has no morals.
Ignore the trolls and focus on your family and keeping yourself mentally healthy.
God will handle the rest.

I thought this article was pretty good, the voice of reason.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged an end to the "absurd war" started by Russia's invasion of Ukraine one month ago, warning that the conflict is "going nowhere, fast" and that the Ukrainian people are "enduring a living hell."
"Continuing the war in Ukraine is morally unacceptable, politically indefensible and militarily nonsensical," Guterres told reporters in New York.
Russia is pounding the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol into the "ashes of a dead land," its local council said on Tuesday, describing two more huge bombs that fell on the city that has been sealed off for weeks.
"Even if Mariupol falls, Ukraine cannot be conquered city by city, street by street, house by house," Guterres said. "This war is unwinnable. Sooner or later, it will have to move from the battlefield to the peace table."
"It is time to end this absurd war," he said.
Russia launched what it calls a "special military operation" on Feb. 24 to destroy Ukraine's military infrastructure. Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Moscow of attacking civilians indiscriminately. Moscow denies attacking civilians.
Guterres said some 10 million Ukranians have fled from their homes and warned the reverberations of war were being felt globally "with skyrocketing food, energy and fertilizer prices threatening to spiral into a global hunger crisis."
"There is enough on the table to cease hostilities - now ... and seriously negotiate - now," Guterres said.

There is so much truth in this statement. When my youngest daughter was born and in NICU the OT support kept me sane. There are so many douchebags on this site but a surprisingly high number are filled with heart. Good luck to you and your family, sir.

Literally everyone I talked to Ukraine about a pending war would laugh and tell me that it will never happen.
This is a very minor situation when compared to yours, but when Ida was heading straight for Baton Rouge, I made the choice to leave a few days in advance and the wife and I rented a home out of state.
Ida came, and while it wasn't a direct hit on Baton Rouge as anticipated, we were without power for over a week. My wife and I spent that in comfort until the power returned and when it did, we drove back. Her work (LSU) was cancelled and mine I could do remotely.
My boss, who had jokingly teased me about leaving, said I was the smartest one for getting out. Everyone who stayed endured misery for about a week or more.
My point...I told my wife that I would rather drive back in a few days laughing that I overreacted as opposed to staying and being caught in a bad (in this case very uncomfortable) situation.
I am sorry you are going through this, but I wish your wife had chosen to take a risk that could have been for nothing, as opposed to the situation she is in.

It is very winnable, however no country ever seems to want to go there. That is a good thing.

There is no doubt wrong choices were made. I personally know a person that stayed for Katrina on the Ms. coast that died because they didn't leave.
I can also tell you stories of people that evacuated because of hurricane threat. They sat in terrible traffic, ten cars deep at the gas stations, had pets with them, couldn't find a hotel and their house gets looted or the hurricane turns and doesn't hit.
Also keep in mind that nobody in her city was leaving or even stock piling supplies for that matter. They all thought it was nonsense. I told her to take the baby and her son to Lviv for a couple of weeks the night before I flew out, but like I said before she is hardheaded. The invasion happened on a Thursday, she was calling the IVF clinic in Kiev on Monday, surprisingly they were still open. I think in her mind, if Russia did invade it would be like 2014. They would drop a few bombs around her and it would be over fairly quickly.
She definitely made some bad decisions. I also regret not staying. In truth, I would only hinder my family in Ukraine, evacuation to Russia would be impossible amongst other things. There is actually more I can do here, where I have better access to things, including funds. That being said, I would still rather be with my family right now.

UPDATE 3/24/2022
I haven't talked to the wife in a few days but I'm able to talk to her sister Lisa everyday through whatsapp. Lisa is able to communicate with them through my wife's son's Ukrainian phone. I'm going to see if I can get his phone on Whatsapp.
They are okay but the fighting has been heavy around her the last few days. When I spoke with her the other day she told me that the fighting is really intense around the apartment we were staying in. She said there is a good chance it is damaged. Luckily Luda and her family left the apartment about a week ago to go some where else.
Anna in Kharkiv and Luba in Kiev are still doing okay.
They are announcing now that America is taking in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. I believe it will be open to ones in higher danger and Ukrainians that have family in America. I'm going to be digging on that all day to see what I can find out. I would not only take her son but any of her family that can get out.

I just received the following message from my wife:
"We are still in the maternity hospital. Bombing everywhere, it is very loud. Soon there will be shooting in the city. Pray for us all. Miss you. Love you with hope that will be together soon. "

Your situation is different, but I think this is a cautionary tale to everyone following it. I don't mean it to dramatize your situation or imply it won't be resolved sooner rather than later.
While most of us won't have your situation with the wife, I think people underestimate the pull of normal life in times of crisis. "I can't leave, we have the IVF" or "We can't leave, nothing will happen and I'll lose my job." Until you're truly up against it those things are very powerful. And deep down most people have a fear of overreaction, they don't want to be the one person in their neighborhood who bugged out and nothing happened, etc.
People tell you that they knew the war was coming - they didn't. The huge majority of Americans paying attention thought it would get resolved or result in a smaller scale conflict because it's 2022 and that's what happens in our era. Even those of us who bought into the idea of a full invasion didn't really believe it until it happened. By all accounts that's how Ukranians felt too. They had all the evidence it was going to happen, but were still in disbelief when it did.
But we live in increasingly uncertain times. I think we're going to be going through a period where things foreign to us a decade ago - pandemics, large-scale war in Europe - suddenly go from remote and antiquated to somewhat realized. So for me, this thread is a testament to the need to prepare for crisis decision making, contingencies, etc. This board probably has better small-scale (relatively) experience with that than most given LA's hurricane history.
