Getting bit while sleeping has to be rare. I have had rattle snakes under my tent under my legs while camping. They went there for the warmth.
That right there is why I do not go camping.

I bet Australia has them. Just looked and surprised they do not have them. Figures though. They probably have snakes there 10x as deadly.
The problem with some Australian venomous snakes is that they don't trigger the danger response from people not from there. The Brown Snake is probably the most prevalent snake in inhabited areas, and there is nothing overtly threatening about its looks. It gets in homes all the time.
The Inland Taipan is similar in nonthreatening looks and it is one of the most venomous snakes in the world.

Pretty good documentary on HBO called Alabama Snakes about the first person ever charged with murder by using snakes to kills someone. Really good.

They are, and although the US doesn't have cobras, taipans or mambas, we do have coral snakes which are also a part of that same family of snakes (Elapid snakes).
You either have to be very unlucky or a complete dumbass to get bit by a coral, though. A dumbass in Alabama got bit by one a couple of years ago when he was playing with it, mistaking it for a corn snake. He damn near died. Corals are reclusive and solitary by nature. They're also not aggressive.

Well thanks. Now I’ve got to start pooping standing up.

Was changing my oil one day when one slithered about a foot from my face. I was gripping the oil filter on a Honda accord and could not get my hand out fast enough

It's got to be extremely rare. Snakes don't typically bite humans unless startled / cornered.
I'm sure it is rare, but this was posted on Reddit the other day, and the number of stories of people with close calls was staggering. Granted, most were out visiting far away places when it happened.
If I recall correctly, the girl from the OP's neighbor tried to drive her to the hospital, but his car wouldn't start. She drove herself, and they didn't carry antivenom. Drove to another, but they had run out of it. Died trying to get to a third.

That Inland Taipan would make a handsome boot, but you'd probably need two or three for a pair of boots.

Fact.
Here’s a few slightly deadly eyelash vipers playing nice on my trip to Costa Rica this week…

Glad you shared a few pics. Eyelash Vipers are just cool snakes. Love the colors.

And a good FYI to drop here in relation to the Coral Snake.....
Don't rely on the rhyme (Red touches black, friend of Jack....) solely for ID. It isn't always that obvious, and if you get outside of the US it can be pretty much useless with other Coral species.
