The only thing I dont like about my Subaru is the 4 cylinder. If I was ever going to purchase one it would have the 6 cylinder.
I agree that the base motor in past years was anemic—I had one. I moved to the “Boxer 6” on my ‘14 and ‘17 Outbacks and can never go back.
2020 saw the all new body and interior design. The “Boxer 6” is no longer an option...the base is a 4-banger, while the upgrade is a 4-banger Turbo.
I did not drive the base 4 of the 2020 model, so I don’t know if they have more gusto or not—I imagine they would...I ordered the turbo 4 in May of last year. Subaru was behind in delivering the 2020 Outbacks...had to extend the old lease 3 months until the new ones finally arrived in October.
Don’t write off a 4-cylinder Turbo... THIS also has a 4 cylinder, and can hold its own, as does the WRX from Subaru, which can be a monster with a little fiddling.

Wife has an outback. She loves it. The screen on the 2020s is badass too

Highlander and it’s not even close.
ETA: maybe the new ones are different. I had a 04 in 2012 and loved it.

All wheel drive is awesome, if you haven’t had the chance to own a car equipped with it. The drive like they’re on rails.

Suburu. This shouldn’t even be a discussion

I am kinda surprised I got way more Subaru recommendations then the Highlander.
I just hope my wife does not end up binge watching The L Word on TV after she drives the Subaru a couple of times.

non-lesbian woman here with an Outback. I love it!!!

We have both...can't go wrong with either. Our last Highlander had nearly 200,000 miles without a single problem.

What’s the boards opinion on the Toyota 4Runner? Thinking about getting one for one of my kids.
I owned a 4Runner. It would not die and I’d highly recommend it if you are okay with the ride since it’s built on a truck chassis.
But to bring this back to the topic of this thread, consider a Subaru Forester. Tons of safety features and I’d probably choose one for my kid over a 4Runner.

I was looking at a used 2016-2017 Highlander in order to get all the premium features in the $30k range but this thread reminded me that the Subaru Outback may be worth looking into.
The Highlander is a little bigger than an Outback but not by much. What annoys me about the newer Highlanders and Pilots is that they are basically mini-vans. They don't even have optional trailering kits with transmission coolers.
Not sure I'd want to get a 2017 Outback knowing that the 2020 models got some nice upgrades. The 2020 Outback Limited starts at $35k which is a little out of range.
That AWD tho.

If you’re company is paying for it and the maintenance, the Outback no question
Ive had more company cars than i can count, mostly Ford Fusions or Chevy Impalas- and the company *always* pays for everything associated with the vehicle... I drive my own vehicle currently, but the best thing about having a company car (when i had them) is that i didnt even have to look at a gas price for about 10 or 12 years.. just pull up to whatever station was most convenient, pull out the company gas card, and start pumping.. in those years, i honestly couldn’t have told you if gas was $1.50/gallon or $3.99/gallon.. but they also covered oil changes , insurance, any repairs or maintenance , etc.. the only downside is a small amount that was deducted form my paycheck for ‘personal use’ (myself and everyone of my coworkers used our cars personally waaay more than we were supposed to), like $40 a month or something.. and the fact that you dont get to drive what you want to drive.. the Fusions were actually pretty decent vehicles, but i hated the cheapo Impalas.
But yeah if you ever get offered a company car where *you* have to cover gas, maintenance or insurance- run for the hills, that is shady as hell.

I've owned a Highlander but have driven both of your choices. I'm a big fan of Toyota but of these two choices I would go with the Subaru. They make exceptional vehicles.

I've got a 2012 Outback with 104k miles and really like it. At 98k miles I replaced the original tires, did the brake pads, and did the bearings. That is all for maintenance. I plan to sell it at around 175k miles based on that history. With AWD it pulls my boat out of the ramp nicely and handles mud and sand roads with no problem, that's mostly why I bought it. That and the safety and repair ratings.
Around 10 years ago I was a Highlander fan. Not for the recent years, though.

Outback is a great car all around and good AWD. Highlander has an advantage if you need a 3rd row of seats.
