You say this jokingly, but there are arguments that paying teachers more competitive salaries would actually attract more experienced professionals to work as teachers.
Im not joking, the ability to make 100k a year and be a much bigger part of my kids lives along with decreased stress. Those existing teachers better watch out, because no way they can know more about the subject matter than me who has spent the last 15 years having to be at the top of my craft to make a living.

Louisiana could compete.
Up the pay here a little but cut 50% of the useless state bullshite paperwork. Give them back their planning periods and an actual lunch and the schools will explode with learning.

Texas Governor wants top teachers to earn six figures
I'll wait while they figure out a legitimate system to evaluate "top teachers"

Teachers should be allowed to negotiate their own salaries.
Give each school X amount of dollars for teacher salaries. $1,000 per child or whatever. Let the school administration decide who to hire and how much to pay them.
This removes the issue of figuring out who a "top teacher" is, let the market determine that.

You do realize that knowing the subject matter is barely half the job, right? You really think it takes an experienced Einstein to teach algebra?

Good comparasion if the anesthesiologist treat 80-100 patients a day and also deal with their paperwork at home and on the weekends.
Teachers should get paid more for the sole reason it would result in a better talent pool which would result in better education

The problem is that the rating system will be inherently subjective.

You still mad.

Knowing the subject matter and helping students relate it to real world situations is far more than 1/2 the job, and I feel fairly confident in myself to learn the rest of it. No offense but I know people who are teachers and probably damn good ones and if they can do it so can I.

Of course. But shouldn’t we attempt to identify the alternative with the most acceptable trade-offs, try it, and commit to improving it?

I don't see this as attracting more teachers to move to texas. Teacher's minds don't work that way (they don't get into teaching for money. They often live where their spouses work or have deep roots to their community).
That said, it could encourage more education majors with a higher ceiling for pay without having to become an administrator.

Not mine. If there's a $100k gig out there to teach ELA, I'm there. I'll stop bitching about wanting a career change and feeling like a loser too.

Not sure about 6 figures but they are underpaid
They're paid what the market dictates. There's a shite ton of teachers out there.

Gov. Greg Abbott wants the state’s best teachers to earn a six-figure salary. Few teachers disagree with that idea but many still question where the money will come from.
He'll just start thumping his bible and dollar bills will fall from the sky

Top teachers should earn a lot, shitty teachers should be fired, and mediocre teachers shouldn't get raises.
None of those things will happen, and until teachers' unions worry about the talent instead of the dregs, that's how the money will be distributed.
