So you’ve mastered splitting the baby instead of taking a philosophical stance. Clearly not having gumption, by your own admission, to taking a side on anything. There are sides to issues. There is right and wrong. There are debatable issues. You provided a chatGPT of centering instead of standing for something. That is neither admirable nor learned. Take a stance that folks can freely debate instead of doing all this shite of we’re all sheep and can’t put a cogent argument together because look at these message board topics
I take plenty of stands. I just do it without a pep squad backing me up.Most people don’t even attempt debate anymore. They just repeat what their side already decided was the “correct” moral position and call it courage.
It doesn't take "gumption" to run to the pt and bitch about libs or join DU to call Trump a fascist. You've mistaken belonging for conviction.

Forgot to reply to this part:
If you want to know my opinions on various political topics start a thread and ask me. I promise you'll get them.
quote:I take sides on political topics daily. I do that on the poli board. In order to keep this on the OT I explicitly promised the mods that this thread is not about political events, figures or policies. And since they seem to have agreed I'm not going to debate those topics here.

I underestimated you. I thought you were condescending, but you weren’t. I still do think you’re dredging people’s lowest levels on message boards to make a bigger conclusion. The divide has and always been way more simple. Humans at their base level choose the path of least resistance. Or the easiest thing to agree with. I still think you may be selling a lot of people short assuming they come to one conclusion or not while dismissing the instinctive nature of self preservation which can graduate to for the better.
Edit to say Trump has done a fantastic job. No apologies necessary

Compare to Reddit which is massively bigger and bans anyone who doesn’t have blue hair.
When I see this it is a clear admission that the writer has no idea how Reddit works. There are over 125k subreddits and conservative ones exist that are FAR bigger than the Poliboard.

I've stated multiple times, both in the OP and in replies to several posters previously hung up on the graphic, that the point of using it was to illustrate my larger point: that two people can be driven almost exclusively by algorithms to come to opposite conclusions based on the same known facts. I suppose I could have spent hours hunting screen grabs from dozens of sites from every persuasion to demonstrate the fracture, but I mistakenly believed most people were aware of the phenomenon I wanted to discuss, most posters here are familiar with the PT, and I underestimated how many people aren’t able to separate arguments from examples. That’s on me.

My very first (or one of my first) reply after the OP stated that I know I’m not immune to the same influences, which would place me firmly in the group of people I’m supposedly selling short.
And forgive me if I’ve mistaken the motive for your first reply to me, but I directly addressed what looks [to me] like it might apply to you in the OP:
quote:
The divide isn’t merely political, it’s psychological. Every attempt to bridge it only deepens mistrust, because when you believe everyone who disagrees with you is evil, there’s no room left to see anything but malice in those who try to meet you halfway.

This, in a microcosm, is the main problem with America .
“YOU GOTTA PICK A SIDE, BROTHER !!1!”.. is one of the main problems with America in 2025 and for the past decade or so.. it’s one of the reasons (not the ONLY reason) that i decided to flee America, while i still had the ability to get out.. i feel politically homeless in today’s America.. as soon as i say somehting negative pertaining to Trump, either online or in real life, it’s “Oh you must be a Kamala lover !!’.. No, that’s not the case at all.. yet i am forced to chose one or the other, which is why i feel politically homeless.. there isnt any representation anymore for people like myself who lean left on some issues and lean right on other issues.. btw i think Reagan and B Clinton were similar to myself, one leaned left and one leaned right, but both were Centrists.. now if you’re a Centrist or a Moderate, it’s considered a slur.. and you are looked at as wishy-washy .. if i were younger i would “stay & fight”.. but im mid 40s, with more years behind me than ahead of me.. i am only one guy with one vote.. so im just trying to get by as best i can, and for me that meant moving out of the US and onto greener pastures.. No place in the world is perfect, but i find today’s USA to be a 3rd world cesspool .

I'm encouraged to learn there are mods on the Poli reigning in the more vicious, incendiary rhetoric. But I am equally discouraged by the vile and baseless invective that remains. Much of it borders on insanity.

To someone on the other, it looks like the opposite, a political figure using power to settle personal scores.
Did they commit a crime or not? One side frames and jails its political enemies when no crime is committed. That same side cries and bitches political targeting when Justice starts to be handed down for their crimes.
As usual, that side is chronically hypocritical

When I see this it is a clear admission that the writer has no actual experience on Reddit. Only the allotted conservative subs allow conservative viewpoints. All the thousands of other subs are left leaning. Even supposed non-political subs often devolve into politics, and non-leftist posters will be banned.
For example, since you’ve never been on Reddit, I’ll tell you that every city has a sub. There is nothing overtly political about these subs. They’re supposedly for discussing local affairs and happenings. And yet they often discuss politics only tangentially related to that city. Right now, bitching about ICE is very popular in city subs. And woe to the poster who argues with the leftists. Expect a warning and then swift banning for “insensitive” comments, regardless of actual substance.
You should check Reddit out for yourself.

I generally agree with what you’re saying but those conservative subs are heavily outnumbered by the left wing ones. On top of that plenty of users have reported being banned on numerous other subs for posting on the conservative ones.
And another thing, there’s lots of non-inherently political subs that have basically become overrun by your average r/politics or r/democrats users. I’m talking about everything from the large subs like r/pics to gif subs to so many of the city and state (even the republican ones) subs throwing in their politics are every opportunity.
So all in all, the number of right leaning and/or conservative users and subs on Reddit is very tiny these days compared to 10 years ago

So? Your point is? I'm not saying it's indicative to the overall view of America or that those who go on it, I do all the time, are all bad people who are dumb.
I'm saying that as a place of political discussion its a sewer. Most times the discussion doesn't go anywhere except down the crapper.

Which way you think Reddit leans obtuse?

You are 100% correct. And the only ones who seem to be able to see this are the ones who don’t lean strongly one way or the other, politically. My opinions and viewpoints are constantly changing because I am very open to hearing both sides and forming an opinion based on what I know and not what the internet tells me.
Agreed, mostly. I also think those of us who can see it (because most people legit cannot see it...they only think their side is right!) also have very diverse friends and therefore we get exposed to many more opinions than most people who almost live in a bubble, an echo chamber and are only around those who agree with them. I grew up in a tiny N La town with only the normal La diversity. It's in Trump country and mostly the yt people are Trumpers and the rest are Dems. That's one half of my facebook friends. The other half is my surburban and urban Houston friends. I've lived in Houston for over 30 years. They are largely very liberal with some Trumpers and more that are like me and in the middle. My FB feed looks like a tennis match during election years with both sides thinking the other is "the devil."
The internet seemed like oh great...everyone will have access to knowledge...we will be smarter. Instead we got...oh wow, people believe everything they see or their friends posts and we are much less smart and saavy.

The mission statement of what the internet would do was "make information accessible to everyone". Turns out it just made becoming a bullshite artist easier and more profitable.

And I guess I’m saying that it’s a tiny sewer vastly outweighed by the gigantic sewer of Reddit among other websites and hardly worth crying about

Who's crying. I never said it was huge sewer. It is a sewer none the less when you look at what is generated as political discourse.
It doesn't have to be as big as Reddit to not be a sewer.
Reddit is a much bigger problem and full of much much worse people.

Well OP is using tigerdroppings, not Reddit, to show how social media splits reality. I know you are not the OP, but the minuscule size of tigerdroppings seems relevant in such a discussion.
