Was Jesse Ventura a SeAL or not? That's been a big "controversy" for awhile now.
He was UDT. During Vietnam, they took volunteers from the UDT teams and created two SEAL teams. The initial BUD/s training was the same for both. The SEALs saw more combat. UDT teams were disbanded in the eighties and they all became SEALs.
Short answer: Whether it's a significant distinction depends on who you talk to. Some make a big deal of it, others don't.

Skip to the 1 minute mark. unless you want to hear him tell you Mr. Rogers wasn't a SEAL.
this guy is a retired Senior Chief...was a SEAL for 20 something years and is the go to person to verify claims of someone being a SEAL.

Good ole Don Shipley. I love watching him bust posers on there. His wife is annoying though.

I love what he does, and he's a funny guy. His wife is kind of annoying...but she's not so bad. Just the biggest hick on the planet.

My brother has gone to him a few times to bust people. (If that's the same one that runs the SEAL museum in Florida) One of them was trying to get on the Bossier Sheriffs department claiming to be a SEAL. Had a tat and everything. They called my brother, he called the Chief, then they had a sit down at the Sheriffs office with the guy and my brother.
Long story short by the time they were done talking the guy understood in no uncertain terms that he was now marked, that real SEALs take that shite seriously, some of them wouldn't give him the option of removing that tattoo himself so he might want to get on that first thing, and never, ever do that stupid shite again.
Needless to say that guy didn't get to be a Bossier Deputy.

I heard him say on one of his videos that for every single ACTUAL SEAL alive, of which there are about 10,000, there are 300 impersonators. That kinda blew my mind.

There are forums dedicated to figuring out if people are who they say they are. If they are true SEALs or any kind of SF, they will tell you in 5 minutes
I still think faking military credentials should be illegal and punishable by 1-5 years in jail

I don't have a problem with it, it's more amusing than anything. I love how they usually go all out and claim crazy things like multiple medals of honor.

they instituted the stolen valor act but it was deemed unconstitutional for some reason. apparently your right to be a lying sack of shite is protected by the first amendment.

Like this guy...not a bad rack for a second lieutenant.

Being a fake cop is illegal though, even if you don't try and arrest anyone
Posted on 5/2/14 at 1:26 pm to Captain Rumbeard
oh I see....they amended it to where it's still illegal if you do it for monetary gain. It's something I guess.

The SEALS have a database. There's no SF or Ranger database, which makes it harder to bust people, it has to be done by world of mouth. The PJ's don't either but they're so small they all know each other, and they're not well known, so few posers try to fake being one.
SF fakers usually get busted when they try to gain something from it, like pad a resume. What's crazy is they've had active duty military posers. Some have gotten away with it for a while.

Not really...The ribbons themselves are a little above his head, but a rack that size could be attained easily in five years
