Alconbury

Awesome area to live in but shite base.

Best location of any of the UK bases.

I enjoyed the location of RAF Lakenheath. Had some really good places to eat around the area, and it wasn't TOO far from Cambridge.

Im closer to Cambridge and an hour by train to Kings Cross in London. Lakenheath is full of horse people

Newmarket is such a dump.

The support jobs in the Air Force are becoming impossible to get. You'll find yourself being a cop (fuc dat), or working on the flight line. I knew some maintainers, and they work their arses off.

Why was I thinking Alconbury was further away? Maybe I am thinking of Croughton. Who knows. I just know I miss Teri-Aki & Aki-Teri in Cambridge.

There is a huge push for some 3D jobs.

You could technically say cops are a support function of the base.

Yea Croughton is out by Milton Keynes. Middle of no where but their COLA is stupid high. I get less here than I did in Germany. Which is absurd b/c this base has nothing. BX and Commissary not open on mondays and have limited hours. Gas pumps close at 6pm.

What's the Pounds/Dollars conversion at now a days over there? When I was there it was near a 2:1 ratio.

Oh trust me, I know all about how sucky it is. When i was there I was a single Airman in the dorms. COLA was about $200. That was enough for a night of drinks out in cambridge and the taxi fare on the way to and from the club.

Its about 180 ish give or take for E-4 single. I was getting 230 give or take in Germany a pay check. OHA survey just went out, lots of foot stomping to be upfront. We are forced to shop off base alot unlike Lakenheath.

Wow! It actually went down?! that's freaking ridiculous. It's sad/pisses me off when people don't take those OHA surveys seriously.

That number will only increase by single digits. Which is a damn shame.

You can still make rank pretty quickly in the AF, but it's up to you to do it. You can make it all the way to E-7 just by getting 5 EPRs and doing well on the WAPS testing. You can do it in 10 years if you are a hard charger.

I agree making E-8 and E-9 afterwards can take a little while, but it's no harder than the other services if you know which game to play.

Hopefully this is something I help change before my time is done in the AF.
