Hell I feel pretty much the same way about all those things you list, just moving from Louisiana to north Mississippi.

When people move, why do they think anyone gives a frick?
Posted on 1/13/26 at 8:25 am to SidewalkTiger
But how else do you deal with the obvious issue of being "bored AF"? You can only write down lists of reassurance so many times in a week....

I agree that the racism in the South is unmatched and I think it’s worse in suburban enclaves like Mandeville and Williamson county more-so than the rural areas IMHO. I’ve had worse looks in those places than in Bum-frick Egypt, lol.
Driving through the South also sucks too. The scenery is generally the same, a lot of unnecessary speed traps/corrupt cops, roads that make zero sense, the random chance of driving through a tornado, and etc.

I didn't word it well, I was referring more to extreme southern LA/MS/AL, which is where I spent the majority of my time.
The MS Gulf Coast really isn't MS.

I can see how that could be true

I lived in south Louisiana for 10 years and now Utah the past 5.
It’s not an either/or proposition. Both places are great if you lean into the strong traits.

That's the crazy thing.
OP says he's moved out of the South but he's still in the South. He's a dumbass
I don't live in Arkansas

No doubt, these were just the things I don't miss. There are obviously some that I do.

So Missouri?
By definition, Missouri is the Midwest but southern/SE Missouri/Bootheel is culturally southern.
You're not helping yourself.

If you make a post this long about not missing a place….you are definetly missing that place!
For all it’s faults home is just home and you will always want to go back there,

There's a notable difference between the Deep South and the Upland South.
Both have their good points and bad points. Chose your own preference.

i just got back from branson....been a couple times
job market? seriously? unless its walmart there is literally no type of industry.
roads? half the damn time you are on a 2 lane highway that is narrow AF and looking over the side of a cliff....no thank you
climate? must be a personal thing. I actually like the heat. I like the beach. i hate cold weather with a passion
i agree with you on much of the other stuff. especially the bugs, insurance cost and trashiness
but i will say...overall that area is just as trashy and maybe more trashy than south LA from a people standpoint once you get outside the affluent areas.
i like the area but crazy AF you mention the job market up there when outside of walmart or driving an hour there is hardly anything job market wise that i could see.

LA and MS beaches are trash
LA beaches (what few it has on the Gulf) ARE trash due to the effect of the Mississippi, Atchafalaya, and Calcasieu Rivers.
Mississippi's mainland beaches are mostly man-made and aren't much better; they are on the brackish Mississippi Sound rather than the actual Gulf, and as such get the effects of the Pearl, Pascagoula, and even the Mobile Rivers. But if you take your boat out to the barrier islands and the actual Gulf, it's like this:
Horn Island:

On the Sound side it's generally like this:
Horn Island
Ship Island
That's why I am am out THERE about every other weekend in the summer.

Absolutely. And between those two and the Mid-South(Piedmont of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama as well as the mountains and all of Tennessee)
But the point is that the OP is still.in the South, especially culturally.

1. Climate I hate swamp arse, I hate high humidity. Give me 30 degrees any day over a heat index of 110 any day. It's nice to sit on the porch in July and not sweat. People actually eat outside here, and it's not a punishment.
This. Moved from Rankin County, MS to the Des Moines area 5 years ago. Folks up here think I am nucking futs when I say I prefer Iowa winters to Mississippi summers, but it’s true. The heat and humidity are unbearable in the summer down there. And while, yes, it’s freezing up here, you can stay home, inside, drink coffee and avoid people except when absolutely necessary. Plus, I don’t start cutting the grass until late April or early May, and usually by the beginning of October, I make that last cut of the season.

SE MO and the Bootheel aren't really part of the Ozarks...

I understand that some folks wouldn't like it, but it works great for me

The Branson area is fairly low income and kind of trashy, outside of tourism

For sure, I like to visit several times a year but I wouldn't want to move back. Some of it is to blame on the Coast exploding with growth, just so busy and congested.
If I were going to live in MS, I like the rural area kind of around Collins/Seminary/Magee. I also like the New Albany/Oxford area.
