Does not = better work.

Sounds like you're paying more now for worse labor IMO.

I understand wanting to have someone there that you could communicate with, but it wouldn't have bothered me.

If you picked a reputable company then more likely than not those "illegals" knew exactly what they were doing.

If you demand that a foreman be at the job so they could dig trenches then you may need to explain that before you hire someone.

My thoughts are that those guys would have done a good job and you just delayed your sprinkler system being put in by a week or so.

Seems like he would have knew exactly what you wanted before the morning they started the job?

Did you not tell him about how you needed the organic garden watered?

At first I was like,"come on, man.. No need to get the BBB on their arse", but you have a valid point and it is getting harder and harder to get quality work/craftsmanship done in this day and age. It is generally worse in the NE than it is down south because anybody that is domestic up here has a shite work ethic for the most part compared to La/Texas/Bama etc.

I'll give you a tip for scheduling contractors

try, if at all possible, to never schedule work on Monday or Friday

trust me

I had this interaction from them?

I didn't understand them. I wanted to make sure there would be a foreman so I told them hold on (putting one finger in the air as one minute)

10 calls no answer from anyone. Said "I'm sorry, vamanos"

That's the only Spanish word I know for leave

And I wasn't going to work with them sitting in front of my house needlessly.

I see.

I had one that spoke English really well and he got rear ended. Cops show up and lock him up. Immigration comes by a day later and lets him go. Said they didn't have enough money to deport him and told him just to be careful. Gave him his truck back and the $2K cash he had on him when they picked him up.

Had 4 more picked up that couldn't speak English and had an expired tag on their plate. All 4 of them got deported (one of them was back like 3 days later FWIW) so there may be some logic to what you are saying.

Do you have a smartphone?

It just took me under 2 minutes to google translate "please wait for your boss to arrive"

I'm pretty sure they did, but they were asking me questions, I had a few of my own (one of them involving things that benefitted them) and there was no one I could speak to. No one

Period. I didn't start to get mad until the 8 or 9th unanswered call. I took time off work for this

And I'm not taking another minute
The feedback of all types was appreciated

No, he's going to be the same more or less.

They're highly reviewed. I was paying more with the other company for less. I have no problem with messicans digging up my yard. These messicans speak English

I'd say you were in the right about everything except the crack about reporting them for illegal hiring practices. You had no proof so that was over the line, IMO.

I don't think it is unreasonable to want to speak to the foreman about where the sprinkler heads will be located, what kind of heads will they be using, what to expect for coverage and water usage, how to operate the control panel. In order to get answers to these questions you need to be able to communicate with the person.

Also, you said you were paying top dollar for this job, it is reasonable to expect some level of customer service. Not being able to communicate with somebody on the crew is not good customer service.

The workers were probably very hard workers and could put in one heck of a sprinkler system but there is more to installing a system then being able to run a trencher and laying pipe.

I wouldn't let them dig up my yard either unless I felt comfortable the job was going to get done right. The alternative could have been a dug up yard with pipes running all over the place underground and heads shooting water randomly everywhere. Better to be safe then sorry.

Just because they couldn't speak English and may have been illegals (how do you know for sure they were illegal, or were you profiling) doesn't mean they wouldn't do a good job. We've had several jobs done by non-English speaking workers, mostly Spanish speaking, and have had no problems. They worked their asses off!! Fortunately I speak Spanish, so I could communicate with them, though we never questioned their ability.

Just because a person is here illegally, or cannot speak your language doesn't make them incompetent or bad. The bias against illegals or those seeming to be illegal is getting to be as bad as racism. They are humans, just like you, dammit!!!

wtf is a "high end" sprinkler system?

Did you think 5-star topless dancers were going to show up to install it?

1)Most Latinos working will do it better for cheaper than others. If you don't like that, maybe you can pay more to the others for their services.

2)I would be upset if they showed up without the foreman. Bad showing on his part. I would have called to asking why they are digging up my lawn with no direction.

3)I can understand being upset with not being able to communicate w the laborers, but to be fair it's not their job to speak with clients. You probably hired them for their pipe laying skills, not linguistics. The foreman being absent is the real problem here IMHO.

I've been hired for similar skills by many unfulfilled wives over the years.
