Roustabout work is tough and thankless. One of the saddest things you can see in the oilfield is an older (50+) roustabout. You can be sure he had a few sudden stops in life.

Comparing the trades to medicine like they’re even remotely similar careers is absolutely laughable.

True. Folks in the medical field have much larger and more fragile egos.

Pool work is my side hack and will continue into retirement for something to do. It's amazing how many pools there are out there with owners that know little to nothing about them.

When you’ve spent 8+ years acquiring large volumes of medical knowledge and clinical skills, it’s natural to think that your opinion should probably be listened to.

Who would disagree?

Not every man is meant to fix your computer. Not every man is meant to fix your car's engine.

Is this kind of work hard to get into? Is there training you did? I don't know squat about pools, but sure, I could learn. I'm retired, in my 50s, but would like to get into something and make a little money, also.

Preach. Not everyone can be fat, pay child support, and drink beer on the way home.

Mechanical, repair trades and doctors have in common... the most important ability in each is being able to diagnose the problem. That's the hardest part.
Fixing things is asy.

I’ve been called to help figure out problem within a major company, I’ve also been called to help with everyday issues. I enjoy these. The engineers with problems they call major, I simplify.

These jobs leave almost no room for error, and the consequences don’t just affect the worker, they can seriously harm others. Not everyone has the mechanical skill or attention to detail required. One small mistake behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler can have devastating results.

Ive always said truck driving and welding is exactly like brain surgery.

You can count my mechanical skills or abilities on one hand, and have fingers left over. So yes, I fully agree that not every individual is meant to be a tradesman.

However, it is precisely because my skills are so minimal that I depend on good craftsmen and tradesman to keep my house, car, lawn equipment, etc in good condition.

We don't need to send more men to the trades, we need to elevate the tradesmen who are good or great, so that more younger people can see it positively, plus we need to supply the right education when they are younger.

The best example I can think of is comparing early 20th century craftsman houses to what they call craftsman today. Those early houses usually didn't have an architect. That style grew when the tradesmen building the house got better materials and tools to work with and started adding their own artistic touches to the houses.

You can't get one like that today. Those men had skills, but they also thought differently.
