Anyone who saw Rambo III could have predicted it.

It is really amazing our arrogance to think we could actually change that tribal country.

What the neocons fail to acknowledge is that the Taliban are Afghanis. The people want a Islamic state it looks to me like.

How could we have possibly have thought we could change that thinking?

Here is a debate question for you---

Had we have pulled out of Saudi Arabia after Desert Storm would OBL have attacked us???

We had relatively little military land presence in the ME prior to Desert Storm. Afterwards we cut deals all over the region for military bases.

I would like to know if that expansion of presence in the region led to 911.

Christ, they couldn't even find a copy of Rambo III to watch.

Probably. The majority of Islamic extremism is centered around Wahhabism, which really has nothing to do with the United States and it’s involvement around the world. If we really wanted to solve the terrorism we’d be assassinating extremist clerics across the globe.

It's definitely acknowledged...we funded them in the 80's during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, but they were the Mujahideen at that time. You are right in that it's pure arrogance though.

Well, arrogance and money.

Exactly.

Anyone can successfully invade. But no matter how long you occupy it, nothing will change.

What we tried to do in Afghanistan is akin to trying to put in a communist, atheistic government in West Virginia. It's mountainous, full of weapons, and no one living in West Virginia would actually want it. It's easy to control Charleston, Huntington, Wheeling, etc. but when those cities are surrounded by people in the hills who want to return to the normal they've always known (with many in the cities feeling the same way but merely under occupation), it's doomed to fail

I don’t know if this will offend the current and past military personnel on this board, but at one point my wife and I had a discussion about the possibility of one of our kids coming up to us and telling us he or she wanted to join the military. She didn’t like the idea for obvious reasons but I said if that’s something he wants to do, then I’d be proud of him or her for doing it and serving.

Now, in today’s society and seeing how they’re running the military and seeing defense contractors that are seemingly really the ones in charge, I’m not too keen on the idea anymore.

Add to the fact that China seems to be gearing up for something big and it’s been quite a while since a very large global/semi global conflict has happened… and i believe the law of average will eventually catch up with us all soon….

It worries me.

How did we not exterminate these vermin? I’m no expert but it seems like if we’d put the full force of the US military into eradicating the taliban instead of going into Iraq…

Afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires for a reason.

The USA literally tried to bend well over 2000 years of world history to its will and to absolutely no one's shock at all, it was nowhere even close to being successful.

We can't even change our country for the positive or protect our own southern border, but we were going to do what Russia couldn't. Vietnam part Deux
