FFS do we need a phone app for everything?
It's about data collection, including "anonymized" (it's not) data about what app you were using before you opened the app in question, a scanning of mobile cookies to see what websites you've visited, which language keyboards you have installed on your phone, how much travel you do, and when, during the day, etc. Of course Toyota and Ford, etc., want that "anonymized" data.

Having to create an account using your email for literally fricking blows.

Why does everything need a subscription is my old person rant.
Yes, I realize it’s companies making money but it’s insane.

My two last haircuts were welcomed with a tablet to sign in. Email and phone number are now required to get a haircut.

I have heard people say over the years, when it comes to appliances "by basic".
Its like back in the day when they sold the TVs that had a VCR attached to them. If the screen messed up, the VCR could still work, but you couldn't use it. When it comes to appliances, the more you have on it that can break the better chance something will break.

Precisely why we coughed up the money for a Speed Queen washer when our unnecessarily hi-tech one went out
Replaced our old super high tech “smart” washer and dryer from Whirlpool made god knows where with some high level model Speed Queens. Those Whirlpools had been serviced many times including a complete warranty replace of the washer - twice.
Speed Queens run like tanks. Dryer actually gets stuff dry and toasty like old school dryers did. Major upgrade.

Some time ago I read an article in a Car & Driver magazine (yes, an actual paper magazine) that this was called "Why-tech" instead of "High-tech"
I saw a similar article about vehicles one time and it was basically a study of people preferring physical buttons/switches vs every control being laid out on a single touch screen. Buttons won out by a landslide, yet it seems like every year, more and more buttons and switches get removed in favor of a central touchscreen to control everything inside your vehicle.
These companies do not give a frick about user preferences in the long run.
I prefer buttons.

Screens are cheaper to make than physical controls in cars.
When the old knobs broke off we’d just wrap a little masking tape on the dial and carry on, but now the dealer wants $1,200 to replace that complicated screen.

How about the new trend of cars having radios but charging you a monthly fee to use their features? Pretty crappy.
Posted on 1/11/26 at 9:17 pm to rintintin
They shove new "features" and technology into shite to justify high prices.
There's a term in technology known as feature saturation, it's when a product already has every useful feature it can have, but then they keep adding shite solely for marketing and sales purposes.

Give me 2 buttons on a dishwasher [On] [Off]
You are in luck. they have one at Home Depot.

TV: hiding basic functions on the actual TV and relying on a remote for everything.
They still make TV that aren't "smart" but they are hard to find.

Automobile consoles: Do we really need a tablet as a center console? I
It's almost over simplified but I rent cars a lot so it's nice to have a similar touch screen instead of trying to figure out a bunch of different bells and whistles.

Speed Queen washer and cheap Conservator dryer. The dryer is a tank with one manual dial. Made in USA.

I’m in the equipment business- started in engineering, then sales, then leadership, now ownership.
I can say with 100% certainty that all this BS that mfgs put on equipment today, no one asked for.
The new John Deere Signature Edition seat has its own controller for crying out loud. Seriously….the seat has a computer. For itself.
