Find an advocate. There's no charge and they'll help with the paperwork. Or go directly to the VA. They won't hardly even talk to you without a DD214. And they'll need to request service medical records. The process takes time. But any money will be retroactive to the filing date.

Yep, this is the easiest way. Some people will charge but only after you've successfully filed as disabled. Any physical documents you have, utilize them, VA heavily relies on the paper trail.

I found out I have Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2016.
Three Dr.s have written letters saying it is from exposure from Agent Orange

Agent Orange conditions

Something doesn't sound right. I'd call a Congressional Rep.

For OP, find a good VSO - State, County, VFW, DAV. Unfortunately, not all of them are good, so maybe ask some other Vets in the area.

Suffered significant hearing loss (80% loss above 800hz) while on active duty, issued and wore hearing aids for the last 5 years on active duty.

Took a 10 year fight with the VA to acknowledge the loss to replace them after they just quit (they lasted about 12 years). In that 10 year fight, had to apply 3 different times because the first 2 the application were somehow "lost".

Best of luck!

I've never seen an organization have such a wide gulf between the good and bad as the VA. You can read glowing reviews or horror stories all day long. Personally, all of my dealings (through family, not for myself) have been great. This includes an organ transplant and all the pre and post-op care that goes along with it.

My experience has been the actual health care providers have been wonderful, if overworked.

The administration though? frick those sacks of shite. Nothing but bureaucratic shitbags who view you as nothing but a nuisance to their cushy civil service job.

The VA process is ridiculously complex and the questions are written in a manner that the average person cannot comprehend. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm not even elderly and trying to do a supplemental claim and they have kicked it back 3 times so far asking for more and more documents.

They will do anything they can to not pay or give in.

I can only imagine how difficult it is for someone older.

Best bet is to use local VA rep, often the local VFW or ask around there for who are the local advocates.

If you're doing supplemental claims it's worth it to use a consulting firm like veterans guardian.

Go to the link below and find the Veteran Service Officer for the parish your dad lives in.

Louisiana Department of Veteran Affairs

Also, like some of the others have said, DAV, VFW, American Legion are helpful as well.

This. The ones in both Ascension and Tangi parishes were very helpful a few years ago. I even heard talk while I was in the office of a Vietnam vet getting a large sum of backpay.

Filed a disability claim, took almost two years for the VA to say it’s not service related. Filed an appeal in 2018. Will take 2 to 6 years .

I filed an appeal and after 2 years still had no answer. I emailed my congressman and the VA replied to him with their standard reply that they are very busy etc, etc. Well, about a week after my email my appeal was answered and my rating approved.

I can’t say my congressman’s inquiry sped the decision, but the timing seems likely.

This is probably the best thing to do.

Contact the DAV. Best advice I can give. If it wasnt for them I never would have gotten my 100% P&T out of the VA.

This is what I had to do for my dad (Vietnam Vet) years ago. It still took over a year, but our House Rep was relentless and pushed the VA to get the papers approved.

Good luck to the OP and best of luck to your family member, let them know their service is appreciated.

You need to contact Disabled American Veterans, and get them to be your advocate. They will need a Power of Attorney specifically for that purpose. They do not charge a thing. It is worth your time to call them and contact their local office.
